Chapter 3 - THE GLASS TOWER CRACKS

-1180 words-
By 11:00 AM, the illusion of Michael and Cassandra’s perfect life began to fracture in real-time.
They were sitting at an upscale bistro in downtown Manhattan, trying to salvage their morning over artisanal avocado toast and espresso, when Michael’s cell phone rang again. This time, it wasn't a bank alert. It was a direct call from Sarah, his direct supervisor and senior partner at Sterling & Croft.
Michael’s face lit up with a relieved smile. "See, Cass? I told you. Sarah’s probably calling to apologize for the automated HR freeze or to give me the rest of the week off for our honeymoon."
He swiped to answer, turning on his most charming, deferential tone. "Sarah! Good morning. I was just wondering—"
"Michael, stop talking," Sarah’s voice cut through the phone like a buzzsaw. It was completely devoid of its usual warm, mentoring cadence. "Clear out your desk by 2:00 PM today."
Michael froze mid-sentence, the smile instantly dying on his face. "What? Clear out my desk? Sarah, I’m on my approved wedding leave—"
"Your employment with Sterling & Croft Law Firm is terminated, effective immediately," she interrupted, her words sharp and absolute. "For gross professional misconduct and violation of firm ethics."
"Ethics?" Michael shouted, drawing sideways glances from nearby diners. He stood up from his chair, his face turning crimson. "Are you out of your mind? What ethics violation? I haven't been in the office in four days!"
"HR has received an unassailable dossier regarding your conduct outside of work hours, coupled with a comprehensive audit of your billable records," Sarah said coldly. "The executive committee voted unanimously twenty minutes ago. Security has been notified. If you attempt to access the building after 2:00 PM without an escort to retrieve your personal items, police will be called for trespassing. Goodbye, Michael."
Click.
The dial tone buzzed in his ear. Michael stood paralyzed in the middle of the crowded restaurant, his phone still glued to his ear, his mouth slightly open.
"Michael?" Cassandra hissed, grabbing his sleeve. "What is going on? Why are you shaking? What did Sarah say?"
"I'm... I'm fired," Michael stammered, the words tasting like ash in his mouth. "They fired me. Just like that. They said... they said professional misconduct."
Cassandra stared at him, her expression shifting from confusion to cold disbelief. "Fired? You're an equity-track senior associate! Your father literally guarantees the firm's primary credit line! How can they fire you? Call your father back right now!"
Michael fumbled with his phone, frantically dialing his father’s number again. It went straight to voicemail. He tried his mother’s number. Voicemail.
"He's not picking up," Michael breathed, panic finally breaking through his arrogance. "Cass, something's wrong. My corporate card is locked, my accounts are frozen, and now I've lost my job. Do you think... do you think someone hacked my accounts?"
Before Cassandra could answer, her own phone began to ring. She looked down at the screen, seeing the caller ID of her boutique PR firm’s largest corporate client—a luxury cosmetic brand that accounted for nearly forty percent of her agency's monthly revenue.
"Hello, Julian?" Cassandra answered, smoothing her hair and putting on her sweetest, most professional PR voice. "Good morning! I was just reviewing the Q3 campaign metrics—"
"Cassandra, we are terminating our retainer agreement, effective immediately," Julian’s voice snapped over the line.
Cassandra’s smile vanished. "Terminating? Julian, we just signed a twelve-month renewal last month! We’ve increased your brand engagement by thirty percent—"
"Our legal department received an anonymous dossier this morning detailing a severe behavioral liability incident involving you and your husband at your wedding venue," Julian said flatly. "Our brand image relies entirely on elegance, inclusivity, and moral integrity. We cannot and will not be associated with someone capable of physical assault. Our legal team will send the contract severance paperwork via email. Do not contact us again."
Click.
Cassandra dropped her phone onto the marble table as if it had turned into a venomous snake. Her chest rose and fell in rapid, shallow gasps.
"They... they cancelled us," she whispered, her eyes wide with horror. "Julian dropped us. That account pays our rent, our staff, our overhead..."
"It’s my dad," Michael said suddenly, a cold dread washing over him as the pieces finally clicked together in his mind. "It has to be. Nobody else has the power to make Sterling & Croft and your biggest client drop us within the span of thirty minutes."
"Your dad?" Cassandra shrieked, her voice cracking as anger surged past her shock. "Why would your father destroy us? We're his family! We just got married!"

"Because of Ellen," Michael muttered, the memory of the wedding corridor suddenly flashing behind his eyelids like a strobe light. The way his mother had cowered. The way he had shoved her into the oak paneling.
"Oh, God," Michael breathed, his knees going weak. "He saw the security footage."
