Chapter 5 - The Subterranean Vault-5

The high-performance luxury SUV Christopher’s firm had deployed for our tactical protection convoy tore through the dark, sleet-choked corridors along the Columbus shipping canal, its heavy tires screaming against the wet asphalt as we pushed toward the subterranean data annex beneath the Vance Tower. A blinding sheet of freezing winter rain battered the reinforced windshield in a relentless, concussive tempo, turning the skeletal silhouettes of the massive freight cranes and rusted containers into a shifting, featureless wasteland of gray water.

The time was 11:24 p.m. We had precisely thirty-six minutes before the international financial clearing houses closed their nightly processing loops in New York, executing the automatic verification script that would permanently lock the asset transfers inside the Nicosia shell accounts.

I sat in the middle row cabin space, my arm resting securely over the back of Willow’s small shoulder as she drifted into an exhausted sleep against my side, her favorite yellow sweater neatly folded over her wrapped chin dressing, her small fingers still clutching her mother’s—sorry, her father’s silver medallion. Beside me on the mahogany console counter sat my personal laptop terminal, its encrypted interface rendering a rapid, scrolling cascade of emerald-green financial transactions.

"The transponder codes are centering on Storage Unit 108 inside the Ironwood Maritime Annex, Gabriela," Christopher’s voice crackled through my wireless earpiece, his tone carrying the deep pride of a long-awaited corporate redemption. "Your father Ronald and Uncle Truett just swiped their master keycard at the server room elevator block ten minutes ago. They’re carrying the original carbon-fiber document box containing the physical hardware tokens they used to clone your profile. If they finalize the zero-fill wipe script... the federal grand jury won't have the baseline documentation to finalize the indictments tomorrow morning."

We didn't wait for a local precinct escort or a state police dispatcher. I launched my large frame out into the freezing storm, my heavy leather winter boots splashing violently through the deep pools of oil-stained drainage water as I sprinted toward the narrow utility access door marked HVAC Maintenance Block B—the subterranean facility that housed the central server core for the Vanguard holding company.
