Chapter 6 - The Crypt of Secrets-6

The sub-level medical archive was an underground vault beneath the estate, built during the Cold War as a secure fallout shelter and later converted into a private storage facility for the Whitaker family's darkest records.

The heavy steel door slammed shut, the electronic lock clicking into place with a mechanical finality.

I lay on the cold concrete floor, clutching my bruised ribs, taking deep, painful breaths. The room was dark, lit only by the faint red emergency lights along the ceiling.

Row upon row of tall metal filing cabinets stretched into the shadows, filled with decades of private medical records, corporate audits, and sealed legal settlements.

I forced myself to sit up. Pain radiated through my torso, but my mind was burning with a cold, desperate clarity. I was locked in the very heart of the Whitaker empire—the place where they kept the truth buried.

I dragged myself to my feet, using a metal shelf for support.

If I was going to die down here, I wasn't going down without finding the weapon that would burn Evelyn’s world to the ground.

I began pulling open the heavy steel drawers.

1995... 2002... 2010...

Thousands of patient files, experimental drug trials, illegal offshore medical accounts. The Whitakers hadn't built their fortune on healing people; they had built it on medical exploitation, illegal organ brokering, and falsified clinical trials.

Then, at the back of the lowest drawer in a locked steel box labeled SPECIAL TRUST ACCOUNTS, I found a thick, black leather-bound ledger stamped with the crest of the Whitaker Medical Group.

I used a heavy metal paperweight to bust the small lock off the box.

I opened the ledger under the dim red light.

The first page contained the medical records of Grant’s father, Richard Whitaker, who had died six years ago under mysterious circumstances.

My eyes scanned the handwritten doctor notes.

Patient Richard Whitaker: Administered synthetic potassium compound over eight weeks... Organ failure induced... Cause of death registered as massive cardiac arrest.

My hands began to shake violently.

Richard Whitaker hadn't died of heart disease. Evelyn had poisoned her own husband six years ago to take control of the family empire before he could finalize his revised will!

And there was more.

On the next page was a birth record from the private maternity wing of the Whitaker Hospital, dated five years ago—the night I gave birth to Oliver.

Infant Male: Born to Elise Harper and Grant Whitaker.

Genetic Panel: POSITIVE for Familial Amyloid Polyneuropathy (FAP).

I stopped breathing.

FAP was a extremely rare, hereditary genetic disorder passed down through specific maternal lines—a condition that causes severe nerve damage, muscle wasting, and joint collapse if left untreated, but easily manageable with early gene-therapy interventions.

My grandfather had mentioned a rare nerve illness in our family line, but he had called it the "mountain weakness."

Evelyn hadn't just stolen Oliver to claim his money. She had discovered his genetic condition at birth, kept him hidden without treatment so his body would slowly deteriorate, and planned to use his "natural" death from an "undiagnosed genetic illness" as a flawless cover to inherit his fifty-million-dollar trust!

The bruises on his arms... his limping ankle... his sudden weakness...

It wasn't just physical abuse. His own grandmother was intentionally letting a treatable genetic condition destroy his tiny body from the inside out!

"You sick, evil monster," I sobbed into the dark, clutching the ledger to my chest as tears of rage poured down my face. "You let him suffer... you let a baby suffer..."

Suddenly, a quiet hum resonated through the concrete room.

The steel ventilation shaft near the ceiling creaked. A small metallic grate was unscrewed from the inside, dropping to the floor with a soft thud.

May you like

A hand reached out from the dark vent, followed by a bruised, mud-splattered face.

It was Grant.
