Chapter 10 - The Industrial Riverfront

-10-

The abandoned textile warehouse loomed like a concrete skeleton against the dark, rain-swept sky of the industrial riverfront. Inside, the cavernous space smelled of damp mortar, rusted iron, and decades of forgotten dust.

A single halogen work light cast a harsh, glaring circle over a wooden chair in the center of the concrete floor.

Daniel Mercer sat tied to that chair, his face bruised, his expensive shirt torn at the collar, trembling violently as he stared up at the two men standing before him.

Julian Prescott stood with his hands in his pockets, looking down at Daniel with undisguised contempt. Beside him stood a massive, thick-necked security enforcer holding a heavy steel pipe.

“You really messed up, Daniel,” Julian said coldly, pacing slowly in a circle around the chair. “You were given a simple, straightforward assignment: infiltrate the Harlow family trust, bide your time, and slowly position our shell companies to acquire regional development rights. Instead, you let your personal arrogance ruin everything, you got caught embezzling, and you allowed Richard Harlow to trace the operation right back to our doorstep.”

“I didn't mean to!” Daniel sobbed, his voice cracking with sheer terror. “They ambushed me! The audit happened so fast—I didn’t have a choice, Julian! You have to help me! Get me out of the state! Give me a passport, money, anything!”

Julian stopped pacing. He crouched down until his face was inches from Daniel’s.

“Help you?” Julian whispered, a cruel smile touching his lips. “We aren't going to help you, Daniel. We’re going to clean up the mess you made.”

Julian stood up and nodded toward the enforcer.

The heavy-set guard stepped forward, raising the steel pipe slightly.

“You’re going to sign a comprehensive legal confession,” Julian instructed smoothly, pulling a document from his coat pocket and tossing it onto Daniel’s lap. “In this affidavit, you will state under oath that Claire Harlow orchestrated the embezzlement scheme herself to frame you for corporate fraud, and that the Harlow family fabricated financial records to sabotage Prescott Holdings. Once you sign it, we’ll put you on a private freight ship heading south. If you refuse… well, let's just say accidents happen on the riverfront all the time.”

Daniel stared at the document, his hands shaking so violently he could barely hold the paper.

“I… I can’t sign this,” Daniel stammered. “If the feds find out I lied under oath—”

“You’re already finished, Daniel,” Julian interrupted ruthlessly. “Your life as an executive is over whether you sign or not. This is your only ticket out of a federal penitentiary.”

The enforcer stepped closer, raising the steel pipe directly over Daniel’s head.

“Sign the paper,” the enforcer growled.

Daniel squeezed his eyes shut, tears streaming down his face as he reached for the pen resting on the table beside him. He pressed the tip of the pen against the paper, his hand trembling so badly the ink blotched across the signature line.

“I’ll sign,” Daniel whispered brokenly. “Just don’t kill me.”

Before the pen could touch the dotted line, a sharp, metallic sound echoed through the cavernous warehouse.

CLACK.

The heavy steel overhead doors at the far end of the warehouse suddenly unlocked and began to rise with a grinding mechanical screech.

Julian spun around sharply, dropping the polite facade. “What is that? Who’s out there?”

The halogen lights outside the open doors illuminated three black SUVs parked in a precise tactical wedge blocking every exit.

From the lead vehicle stepped Marcus Reed, followed by four armed tactical operatives in dark protective gear.

And stepping calmly behind them, sheltered beneath a black umbrella, was Claire Harlow.

Julian’s face drained of color. He looked from the open doors back to Daniel, realizing with horrifying clarity that they had walked directly into a well-laid trap.

“Julian Prescott,” Claire’s clear, effortless voice carried across the echoing concrete warehouse, cutting through the damp air with absolute precision. “I don't think my father’s legal team would appreciate you coercing false confessions on our family’s municipal properties.”

Julian cursed under his breath, signaling his enforcer. “Take him! Grab the paper!”

The enforcer lunged forward to grab Daniel by the collar, but before he could touch him, a sharp thud echoed through the room.

A rubber-coated tactical baton sailed through the air, striking the enforcer’s wrist with bone-cracking force. The man howled in pain, dropping the steel pipe as Marcus Reed closed the distance with terrifying speed, dropping the guard to the concrete with a single, brutal sweep of his leg.

Julian scrambled backward, reaching inside his coat for a concealed firearm.

Before his fingers could wrap around the grip, a red laser dot appeared directly center on his forehead.

Marcus leveled his sidearm with absolute, unwavering precision.

“I wouldn't do that, Mr. Prescott,” Marcus said coldly. “My finger is remarkably sensitive today.”

Julian froze, his hand slowly withdrawing from his coat, his face slick with cold sweat.

Claire walked slowly into the center of the warehouse, her heels clicking rhythmically against the concrete floor. She stopped several feet away from Julian, looking down at Daniel, who sat tied to the chair, weeping uncontrollably.

“Claire…” Daniel whimpered, looking up at her with pathetic, desperate eyes. “Claire, please! They forced me! They made me do it! Save me!”

Claire looked down at her ex-husband. There was no anger left in her eyes. There was only profound, unyielding coldness.

“You chose your bed, Daniel,” Claire said softly. “Now you get to lie in it.”

She turned her gaze back to Julian Prescott, who stood trembling against the back wall.

“Tell your uncle Arthur that the Harlow family extends its warmest regards,” Claire stated clearly. “And inform him that his little game is officially over.”

Marcus stepped forward, slapping heavy steel zip-ties around Julian Prescott’s wrists before hauling him roughly to his feet.

Simultaneously, a secure tablet in Marcus’s tactical vest chimed, displaying a flashing green notification: TRANSMISSION COMPLETE TO FEDERAL PROSECUTOR AND STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL.

The audio-visual confession Julian had just attempted to coerce from Daniel had been broadcasted live, recorded in high definition, and securely routed to federal magistrates before the enforcer could even raise his pipe.

The Prescott syndicate’s trap had sprung, but it had snapped shut around their own necks.
