Chapter 10 - The Stand in the Sub-Basement

3

The heavy steel security door at the end of the corridor shuddered under a powerful external blow.

Bang. Bang. Clang.

"Charges are set!" a harsh voice echoed through the metal door. "Blow the hinges!"

I didn't panic. The paralysis of my old life—the frightened woman who let her husband dictate her worth on a suburban porch—was entirely gone. I was Emily Whitmore, and this was my domain.

I snatched the encrypted flash drive and the legal documents from the iron box, shoving them securely into the leather briefcase. Then, with steady hands, I picked up the heavy brass revolver from the velvet lining of the box. I checked the cylinder—fully loaded, six heavy lead-and-brass rounds. My grandfather had taught me how to handle a firearm at our old family cabin upstate when I was sixteen, a memory I had buried beneath years of domestic subservience.

BOOM.

The security door blew inward in a cloud of thick gray smoke and flying steel shrapnel.

Two tactical operatives surged through the smoke, their carbines raised, sweeping the room with tactical precision. But they expected a terrified housewife cowering behind a desk—not a woman standing calmly beside the oak table with a leveled revolver.

"Drop the—" the lead operative started, but he didn't finish the sentence.

I didn't shoot to kill; I aimed low, squeezing the trigger with deliberate force.

CRACK.

The deafening roar of the revolver echoed off the concrete walls like thunder. The bullet struck the concrete floor just inches from the lead operative's heavy combat boot, sending a blinding shower of stone chips and sparks into his tactical goggles. He stumbled backward, cursing, colliding with his partner and tangling their lines of fire.

"Secure the perimeter!" I shouted, my voice cutting through the ringing in the room with an authority that stunned even myself. "You are trespassing on federal trust property under armed defense!"

Before they could recover their footing, I bolted toward the narrow emergency service tunnel located behind the archival shelving units—a narrow maintenance shaft that led directly beneath the city’s municipal subway line.

Footsteps pounded furiously behind me as the operatives regained their balance, shouting orders into their radios.

May you like

"She's heading for the maintenance tunnel! Cut her off at the drainage junction!"

I squeezed my body through the narrow iron service hatch, pulling it shut behind me and throwing the heavy deadbolt into place just as the first tactical glove slammed against the exterior mesh.
