Chapter 15 - UNBREAKABLE ROOTS

-15-

Five years after that fateful night at The Aurelia, the anniversary arrived with the quiet dignity of a milestone conquered and surpassed.

It was a Sunday morning in June. The sun was streaming through the bay windows of our brownstone, warming the hardwood floors. Downstairs, the kitchen was alive with the familiar, chaotic symphony of six-year-old triplets arguing over whether pancakes should have blueberries or chocolate chips.

I stood in front of the master bathroom mirror, fastening a simple gold necklace around my neck. In the glass, I caught sight of the framed photograph resting on the vanity—a snapshot taken last week at our upstate facility opening, featuring Julian, myself, the triplets, and Marcus all laughing together under a cloudless blue sky.

There was no trace of fear in that reflection. No lingering shadow of Eleanor Vance’s tyranny, no ghost of Victoria’s malice, no panic from a hospital bed.

Just an empire built with my own two hands, a family held together by unconditional love, and a life that belonged entirely to us.

Julian stepped into the bathroom behind me, wearing a soft gray t-shirt and jeans, holding two mugs of steaming coffee. He handed one to me, smiling warmly as his eyes met mine in the mirror.

“Breakfast is officially a disaster zone,” Julian reported cheerfully. “Noah is attempting to negotiate a treaty between the blueberry faction and the chocolate chip coalition.”

“And who is winning?” I asked, taking a sip of the coffee.

“Naturally, Noah has appointed himself neutral arbiter and consumed both sides of the negotiation,” Julian laughed, wrapping his arms around my shoulders from behind and resting his chin on my head.

We stood together in silence for a moment, watching the morning light flood the room.

“Happy anniversary, Clara,” Julian whispered, his voice warm and steady.

“Happy anniversary, Julian,” I replied, turning around in his arms and pressing my face against his chest, listening to the steady, strong beat of his heart.

Down the hallway, the sound of three pairs of little feet came thundering toward our bedroom door, accompanied by high-pitched giggles and shouts of excitement.

The door burst open.

Noah, Maya, and Leo piled into the room, tumbling across the carpet in a tangle of limbs and energy, shouting in unison:

“Mom! Dad! Pancake emergency!”

Julian and I exchanged a warm, knowing look, both of us smiling as we broke apart to catch our tumbling children.

We didn't need a real estate mogul’s fortune to know we were safe. We didn't need high-society approval to know we were cherished.

Our roots were deep. Our foundation was unbreakable. And our story was just getting started.
