Chapter 2 - The Stolen Identity-2

The air in the hospital room felt suddenly thin, as if the oxygen line had been severed.

I stared at the document resting on my lap. The name printed under CHILD'S NAME was not Elena Mercer. It was Elena Vance. The mother listed was a woman named Claire Vance—a woman I had never heard of in my life. Evelyn and Richard’s names appeared nowhere on the original certificate. Beneath it was a secondary document: an expedited, sealed guardianship decree filed in a rural county court three decades ago, signed by a judge who had later been disbarred for corruption.

"This... this isn't possible," I choked out, a cold tear slipping down my cheek and soaking into the hospital pillow. "I look like my father. I have Richard’s dark hair... I have Evelyn’s eyes..."

"You have Claire Vance's eyes," Daniel corrected gently, pulling out a black-and-white photograph from the file.

The photo showed a striking woman in her mid-twenties, standing in front of a modest stone cottage, holding a newborn wrapped in a hand-knit blanket. Her face was my face. The high cheekbones, the slight cleft in the chin, the almond-shaped hazel eyes that I had stared at in the bathroom mirror every morning of my life wondering why I looked like an outsider in my own family photos.

"Who was she?" I whispered, my voice breaking. "Where is she?"

"Claire Vance was your mother," Daniel said. "She was an brilliant research scientist at the University of Washington. And thirty-two years ago, she was the sole owner of a lucrative patent for an automated medical diagnostic algorithm—the very foundation of the software suite that built your multi-million-dollar company, VanceTech."

The pieces began to violently collide inside my head like crashing cars.

"VanceTech..." I gasped, my chest heaving. "When David and I founded the company seven years ago, my father insisted we use the name VanceTech because he claimed it was an old family brand from his grandfather's side!"

"It wasn't his grandfather's," Daniel said coldly. "Richard Mercer was Claire Vance’s accountant. When Claire died thirty years ago under extremely suspicious circumstances—a hit-and-run accident that was never solved—Richard and Evelyn took custody of you. But they didn't do it out of the goodness of their hearts, Elena. They did it because Claire’s will stipulated that her multi-million-dollar patent royalties were tied directly to your legal custody."

"They stole me..." I breathed, the sheer terror of the revelation sweeping over me. "They didn't adopt me out of love. They took me as an asset!"

"They took you to harvest your mother's fortune," Daniel confirmed. "For twenty-two years, Richard funneled Claire's patent distributions into his own shell accounts. But when you turned twenty-five, the original trust terms dictated that the underlying IP ownership transferred directly into your personal name. That's why Richard forced you to start VanceTech—to keep the revenue stream flowing under your management, while making sure you felt perpetually indebted to them so you would keep paying their bills!"

Suddenly, the door to the hospital corridor slammed open!

"WHERE IS SHE?!" a shrill, hysterical voice screamed down the hallway. "WHERE IS MY DAUGHTER?!"

Evelyn Mercer pushed past a startled security guard, her expensive platinum hair disheveled, her designer tracksuit wrinkled. Behind her stepped Richard Mercer, his face red with fury, holding his dead smartphone in his hand like a weapon.
