Chapter 11 - THE TRIAL OF DANTE MORETTI

-11
Dante’s trial began fourteen months after Sophie heard the wall.
By then the triplets were toddlers.
Walking badly.
Falling constantly.
Screaming for ordinary reasons.
Teething.
Toys.
Wrong-colored cups.
Every normal scream still tightened my chest.
Trauma teaches body before mind.
Dr. Gable assured me they showed no developmental effects from the nursery exposure.
We remained vigilant.
Not obsessive.
Mostly.
Nora hated vacuum cleaners.
Theo loved music.
Miles slept through thunderstorms.
If Dante expected permanent fear conditioning, he failed.
Good.
I testified for three days.
That surprised journalists.
Mafia boss against own uncle.
Headlines loved it.
Reality felt less cinematic.
Hours of documents.
Dates.
Questions.
Defense attacked my credibility.
Fair.
“You are a convicted racketeer?”
“Yes.”
“You have ordered acts of violence?”
“Yes.”
“You benefited financially from illegal enterprises?”
“Yes.”
“You are cooperating with government to reduce your own sentence?”
“Yes.”
“So why should anyone believe you?”
I looked at jury.
“They shouldn’t believe me because I say something.”
Pause.
“They should compare what I say to recordings, bank records, devices, medical evidence, witnesses, and documents.”
Naomi had coached nothing there.
Truth was strongest when it did not require my reputation.
Then defense implied I invented Dante’s conspiracy to eliminate rival.
Naomi played hunting lodge recording.
Dante’s voice:
Matteo was weak.
Yes, I increased exposure.
Silence in courtroom.
Then:
The father chooses.
Then Rosa.
Rosa’s cassette was admitted partially with legal limitations.
Alessandra testified directly.
My mother walked into courtroom after thirty years of being labeled insane.
Dante looked at her.
For first time, I saw fear.
Alessandra took oath.
Defense asked:
“Mrs. Moretti, were you hospitalized for psychiatric illness?”
“Yes.”
“Were you diagnosed with delusions?”
“Yes.”
“Then how can jury rely on memories?”
She answered:
“Because records now show the things they called delusions existed.”
The Red Room.
Triplets.
Matteo’s file.
Varga.
Dante’s signatures.
She did not deny treatment.
She reframed evidence.
Then defense asked whether she hated Dante.
“Yes.”
Simple.
“Does that affect your testimony?”
“It affects my feelings.”
Pause.
“Documents affect my testimony.”
Naomi smiled faintly.
That was my mother.
Then Marco.
Dante stared at him.
Defense tried using identity.
“You were raised as Marco Bellini.”
“Yes.”
“Now claim to be biological Moretti.”
“I do not claim Moretti as identity.”
“What?”
“My DNA is Moretti.”
Marco looked at jury.
“My parents were Enzo and Maria Bellini.”
Dante’s face hardened.
Defense moved on.
Then Camille Hart.
Her testimony about medication substitution.
She cried.
Defense called her liar seeking leniency.
True motive maybe.
But payment records supported.
Hospital access.
Medication anomalies.
Rafael’s presence.
Celeste’s videos.
Then Dr. Gable.
He explained medical evidence cautiously.
Could altered medication contribute to hemorrhage?
Yes.
Could he prove Dante physically administered?
No.
Important.
Prosecution did not overclaim.
Then Elena.
She spoke about Rosa.
Ledger.
Sophie.
Household.
Defense asked whether she blamed Dante for mother’s death without proof.
“Yes.”
Honest.
“But I’m not asking jury to convict him for what I feel.”
Good.
Sophie did not testify.
Absolutely not.
Prosecutors had enough without turning four-year-old discovery into courtroom spectacle.
Her observations entered through adults and device analysis where legally proper.
I insisted.
Naomi agreed.
Children are not props.
Then Dante testified.
Against attorney advice apparently.
He believed he could control room.
He was good.
Calm.
Intelligent.
He described original Red Room as outdated medical research authorized by Vittorio.
Denied knowing lethal risk.
Denied killing Matteo intentionally.
Denied ordering Celeste murdered.
Said Camille acted beyond instructions.
Denied Rosa.
Admitted nursery devices but claimed purpose was “security resilience assessment.”
Naomi asked:
“Why not tell Adrien?”
“He was emotionally compromised.”
“By what?”
“Grief.”
“From wife’s death?”
“Yes.”
“Whose death you were implicated in.”
“Allegedly.”
Then:
“Why use frequencies adults could not hear?”
“To avoid unnecessary disturbance.”
I almost laughed.
He made hidden infant distress sound considerate.
Naomi displayed schedule.
Phase III 120 minutes.
Three babies screaming.
“Necessary disturbance?”
Dante stared.
Then:
“Why did you prepare guardianship documents?”
“Contingency.”
“Why were sedatives prepared for Adrien?”
“Medical safety.”
“Why replicate nursery at dairy property?”
“Emergency relocation.”
“Why classify Nora as primary?”
No answer.
“Why Theo and Miles controls?”
He shifted.
“Historical terminology.”
“Why abduct Elena and Sophie?”
His face tightened.
“I did not abduct.”
“They were tied in hunting lodge.”
“For their safety.”
There it was.
The jury noticed.
Safety.
Every harm renamed.
Naomi stepped closer.
“Mr. Moretti, is there any act you cannot call protection after you have already decided to do it?”
Dante looked at her.
No answer.
Then Celeste.
Her greenhouse recording.
Not all statements admissible for every purpose, but portions used under evidentiary rulings.
Her voice filled courtroom.
If Dante hurts me, do not avenge me by becoming Vittorio.
Dante looked down.
Naomi introduced payment records.
Camille.
Rafael.
Medication supplier.
Dante’s device orders.
Continuity scheme.
Motive.
Then final surprise.
Rafael Orsini had kept voicemail.
Recovered from cloud archive.
Dante.
Night Celeste died.
“Make sure she cannot speak to Adrien before morning.”
Not “kill.”
Again.
But context.
Then second message after death:
“It’s done. Move Camille and clean pharmacy access.”
Dante’s own voice.
His face changed.
He did not know recording survived.
Neither did we until week before trial.
Evidence beats mythology.
Jury deliberated five days.
Convictions:
Murder conspiracy related to Celeste.
Kidnapping.
Child endangerment.
Fraud.
Conspiracy.
Witness tampering.
Multiple charges from revived program.
Old Matteo death could not be prosecuted exactly as we wanted due evidence and time, but court recognized conduct during sentencing.
Rosa’s death remained officially unresolved pending separate review.
Not every wound gets a verdict.
That hurt Elena.
She accepted it.
“Truth still exists.”
She said.
Yes.
At sentencing, I could speak.
I almost refused.
Then Celeste’s words:
Truth survives powerful men.
So I stood.
Dante watched.
I said:
“My uncle believed fear proved strength.”
Pause.
“He frightened babies to decide which deserved power.”
I looked at him.
“He was wrong before experiment began.”
No baby deserves power test.
No child should carry adults’ empire.
“I am not asking court to punish him because he failed to choose the right heir.”
I shook my head.
“There was never supposed to be an heir.”
Then:
“My wife died because she found a system that treated children as instruments and parents as weaknesses.”
My voice broke.
“Her final act was not to ask for revenge.”
I looked toward Elena.
“She chose a housekeeper as guardian because she understood something our family spent generations refusing to learn.”
Blood is not qualification.
Power is not care.
Fear is not loyalty.
Then Dante received sentence that would keep him imprisoned for rest of likely life.
As officers moved him, he looked at me.
“You’ll regret destroying the family.”
I answered:
“No.”
Then corrected.
“I destroyed a system.”
My family was elsewhere.
Three toddlers.
My brother.
My mother.
Elena.
Sophie.
Celeste’s memory.
Dante had confused organization with family until he could no longer imagine one without control.
That was his tragedy.
Not mine.
Outside courthouse, Marco waited.
“You did well.”
“I hate public speaking.”
“You run meetings with killers.”
“Different audience.”
He laughed.
Then handed me phone.
Video from Elena.
Triplets at lunch.
Nora wearing pasta on head.
Theo asleep in high chair.
Miles stealing Sophie’s bread.
Sophie said:
“Mr. Moretti, Miles is criminal.”
Marco looked at me.
“Genetic.”
I shoved him.
Then my attorney called.
My own sentencing date had been set.
May you like
Consequences did not disappear because Dante lost.
My turn came next.
