Chapter 3 - The Stranger at the Door

Andrew scrambled backward off the sofa, stumbling over the coffee table as Chloe let out a sharp, startled shriek. I didn't yell. I didn't storm the glass door or pound my fists against the wood. I simply reached into my coat pocket, pulled out my phone, and snapped three crisp, high-definition photographs of the living room, capturing Andrew’s terrified expression, the champagne bottle, and Chloe’s half-naked form huddled beneath the silk robe.
Then, with deliberate slowness, I turned on my heel and walked back toward my Subaru.
"Claire! Wait! Claire, stop!" Andrew’s voice cracked desperately as he threw open the sliding glass door and bolted down the wooden steps, chasing after me through the gravel lane in his stocking feet. "It’s not what you think! Please, just let me explain!"
I stopped by the driver’s side door, unlocked it, and turned to face him. He looked pathetic—his hair disheveled, his cashmere sweater dusted with shattered glass fragments, his face pale and sweating despite the cool autumn air.
"Explain what, Andrew?" I asked, my voice terrifyingly calm. "The plumbing leak? Or the corporate restructuring plan?"
He stopped a few feet away, his chest heaving. "How... how did you—"
"I listened," I said simply. "For seven years, I listened to your excuses, your mother's demands, and your gentle, reasonable voice telling me that everything was under control. But it turns out you were just outsourcing your cruelty to your mother while you built a separate life behind my back."
Before Andrew could scramble for another fabricated excuse, a sharp crunch of tires on gravel echoed down the lane.
A silver sedan pulled up directly behind my Subaru, blocking both of us in. The driver’s side door opened, and a tall, sharp-featured man in a tailored charcoal suit stepped out. He looked to be in his late forties, with silver-streaked hair and an expression of cool, professional detachment. He held a thick manila envelope in his hand.
"Are you Claire Morgan?" the man asked, his voice deep and resonant.
"I am," I replied, my hand resting near my car door. "And you are?"
"My name is Julian Vance," he said, stepping forward and offering the envelope. "I am a private investigator retained by a client whose identity I am legally bound to protect for the moment. But I believe what is inside this envelope will answer several questions you didn't even know you needed to ask about the man standing behind you."
Andrew’s face went from pale to chalk-white. He took a staggering step forward, his eyes locked on the stranger. "Who sent you? What is this?"

Julian Vance didn't even look at Andrew. He kept his steady gaze fixed on me. "Open it, Mrs. Parker. What you find inside won't just change your divorce proceedings. It will change who gets to keep your home, your assets, and your peace of mind forever."
I took the heavy manila envelope, slid my thumb beneath the metal clasp, and pulled out a stack of documents and photographs that would blow the foundation of my entire marriage straight into the dirt.
