Chapter 11 - The Inheritor’s Oath

11 - 15

Three weeks after the fall of the Vance dynasty, the morning sun shone brightly through the tall arched windows of Arthur Vance’s downtown estate—the grand historic mansion that had once been forbidden territory to me, and was now legally mine under the validated contingency will.

I stood before the massive floor-to-ceiling mahogany bookshelves in Arthur’s private study, wearing a sharp, tailored charcoal-gray business suit. The mud-stained wedding dress was gone, sealed away in a preservation box in the basement alongside the memories of a fourteen-hour nightmare that felt like it belonged to another lifetime entirely.

A soft knock echoed against the open study door. Marcus stepped inside, looking fully recovered from his ordeal in the mountains, holding a thick stack of finalized asset transfer documents.

“The probate court just finalized the execution of Arthur’s estate,” Marcus announced, a broad smile breaking across his face as he laid the leather-bound folder on the polished mahogany desk. “Every single offshore account, real estate holding, and corporate asset previously controlled by the Vance family has been legally transferred to the Arthur Vance Foundation for Public Transparency—with you as the sole permanent trustee.”

I looked down at the documents, tracing my finger over my signature on the primary trust deed. “And Julian and Victoria?”

“Sentenced to preliminary holding without bail pending their federal trial for Arthur’s murder and corporate racketeering,” Marcus replied, sliding into the leather armchair opposite the desk. “General Thomas Vance is facing a military tribunal at Fort Leavenworth. They’re throwing the book at all of them. No pardons, no bail, no way out.”

A profound sense of peace washed over me, heavy and grounding like an anchor hitting the ocean floor. The ghosts that had haunted Arthur’s legacy were finally locked away where they could never hurt anyone again.

“What about you, Marcus?” I asked, looking up at him. “The state prosecutor’s office offered you back your old position as senior federal litigator with a full commendation.”

Marcus chuckled, shaking his head. “I think I’m done with standard bureaucracy for a while. I’m setting up an independent forensic auditing firm specializing in corporate corruption and white-collar syndicates. And I happen to need a brilliant, ruthless managing partner.”

I raised an eyebrow, a familiar, confident smile touching my lips. “Are you asking me for a job, Marcus?”

“I’m offering you a partnership, Elena,” Marcus corrected, leaning forward with a serious glint in his eye. “You dismantled a multi-million-dollar criminal syndicate and a corrupt federal dynasty in less than a month while wearing a wedding gown. I’d be a fool not to partner with you.”

I stood up from the desk, walking over to the window to look out over the immaculate gardens where Arthur used to sit and read. The sky was clear, endless, and wide open.

“Acceptable,” I said, turning back to face him. “But we set our own hours. And no one gets to throw dish towels in the office.”

Marcus laughed out loud, standing up to shake my hand. “Deal.”

As Marcus left the study to finalize the paperwork downstairs, I walked over to Arthur’s antique oak desk. Resting on the corner was a small, framed photograph of Arthur smiling warmly, taken years before his murder. Next to it lay the heavy gold signet ring of the Vance family crest.

I picked up the ring, turning it over in my palm. They thought they had broken me in a single morning, reducing me to a servant in their house of lies. Instead, they had handed me the keys to their entire kingdom.

I slipped the ring onto my finger, locked the office door behind me, and walked down the grand staircase to meet my future—fully in control, completely untouchable, and ready for whatever chapter came next.
