Chapter 10 - THE ARCHITECT'S TRAP

-10-

The executive suite on the fourth floor of the Sterling Global data vault was bathed in total darkness, save for the pale, greenish glow of a single laptop screen resting on the mahogany conference table. The room smelled faintly of expensive cigar smoke and old paper—the exact same scent that had lingered in my father’s private study back at the mansion.

I pushed the heavy oak double doors open silently, my boots making no sound against the thick Persian rug. Marcus Jr. and his two tactical operatives fanned out instantly, sweeping the corners of the cavernous room with their weapons drawn, laser sights painting erratic red dots across the dark walls.

"Clear," Marcus Jr. muttered, lowering his weapon slightly as he approached the conference table.

Sitting in the high-backed leather executive chair, calmly spinning an expensive Montblanc fountain pen between his fingers, was Richard Vance. He wasn't running; he wasn't panicking. He looked completely relaxed, dressed in a flawless charcoal bespoke suit, his silver hair neatly combed back, wearing the exact same gentle, grandfatherly smile he had worn while shaking my hand at my father’s funeral six years ago.

"I wondered how long it would take you to connect the dots, Claire," Richard said smoothly, his voice carrying an unbothered, silky calm as he stopped spinning the pen and set it down on the table. "You always did have your father's paranoid intuition. Though, I must admit, you moved much faster than I anticipated. Getting Darren locked away in federal max-security in under a week? Impressive, even for an international asset recovery specialist."

I stepped out from behind Marcus Jr., walking slowly toward the conference table until I stood just six feet away from him, my hands resting calmly inside my blazer pockets.

"You helped Darren frame the 2001 warehouse fire, Richard," I said, my voice deadpan and icy. "You helped him cover up the manslaughter of night-watchman Miller, you helped him embezzle from the family trust, and you helped him slowly poison my mother with antipsychotic sedatives just so you could quietly liquidate the entire Sterling portfolio through an offshore Swiss blind trust."

Richard chuckled softly, leaning back in his chair and crossing one leg over the other. "Poison is such a harsh, unsophisticated word, Claire. Let's call it... chemical stabilization. Your mother was grieving, erratic, and deeply unstable after your father died. Darren needed compliance, and I simply provided the legal framework to ensure the estate didn't self-destruct under her emotional mismanagement."

"And my father?" I pressed, stepping another inch closer, the grip of my firearm cold against my palm. "Did you provide the legal framework for his murder, too?"

Richard’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, a fleeting shadow crossing his eyes before he quickly masked it with a polite, clinical expression. "Your father’s heart simply gave out under the stress of his own guilt, Claire. He built an empire on blood and ash, and men like that always collapse under the weight of their own hypocrisies. I merely picked up the pieces he was too weak to manage."

"You didn't pick up the pieces, Richard," I said, pulling my hand out of my pocket and placing the compact SIG Sauer flat against the polished mahogany table, right beside his laptop. "You were the one holding the hammer all along."

Richard stared down at the firearm, then back up at my face. His polite smile finally vanished entirely, replaced by a sharp, calculating glint. "You really think shooting me in a secure government-backed data facility is going to solve your problems, Claire? If I die right now, my offshore servers automatically release the encrypted master encryption keys to the federal prosecutor's office. Every single illegal transaction, every tax evasion scheme, every single dirty secret your father and brother ever committed—including the true origin of your entire family fortune—will be plastered across every major news network by suppertime. You'll lose everything. The company, the mansion, your reputation, your empire. Gone in a single click."

I didn't blink. I didn't flinch. I just stood there, looking down at the man who thought he had checkmated the entire Sterling bloodline.

"You still don't understand who you're dealing with, do you, Richard?" I leaned forward, resting my palms on the table, bringing my face inches from his. "Darren was an amateur playing a high-stakes game. You're a professional thief trying to outsmart an apex predator."

I tapped the screen of his laptop with my index finger. "While you were sitting here explaining your master plan, Chloe didn't just isolate your terminal. She executed a reverse-trace protocol through the Swiss blind trust. Your personal offshore accounts—every single penny you skimmed since 2001—have just been legally seized under federal asset forfeiture laws and redirected back into the Sterling Global Charitable Trust."

Richard’s eyes went wide. He lunged forward, grabbing his laptop and frantically tapping the keys, but the screen flashed a bright, unforgiving crimson: ACCESS DENIED. ASSET FORFEITURE COMPLETE.

"No... no, that's impossible!" Richard stammered, his face draining of all color as his hands began to shake uncontrollably. "I encrypted those accounts behind five layers of Swiss firewall protection!"

"Firewalls are only as secure as the people who build them," I said, straightening up and gesturing to Marcus Jr. "Take him away."

May you like

As Marcus Jr. and his tactical operatives stepped forward, snapping cold steel handcuffs around Richard’s wrists and hauling him out of the executive chair, I reached over, closed his laptop, and picked up my firearm, sliding it back into my holster.

The game was over. The rot at the root of the Sterling empire had finally been cut out, piece by agonizing piece.
