Chapter 10 - THE GILDED CAGE

The private dining room at Le Cygne—the most exclusive, Michelin-starred French restaurant in downtown Chicago—was entirely empty, save for the single, candlelit table set up in the center of the room.
Carmine had rented out the entire establishment for the evening, ensuring absolute privacy, absolute security, and zero prying eyes. Twelve armed Falcone enforcers stood stationed at every exit, hallway, and kitchen entrance, turning the temple of haute cuisine into an impenetrable fortress.
Ivy sat at the small, elegantly appointed table, wearing a breathtaking, deep-emerald silk dress that Mrs. Gable had personally selected from a private designer boutique in Paris. The rich green fabric hugged her curves, perfectly complementing her dark hair and making her look less like a former dishwasher and more like a European princess taking her rightful place in high society.
She stared down at her plate of pan-seared duck breast, her stomach too tightly wound with nervous butterflies to take more than a single bite.
Across the table, Carmine sat in a tailored black tuxedo, swirling a glass of vintage red wine, watching her with an unblinking, hypnotic intensity. He hadn't touched his food either. His entire world, for the past hour, had been entirely consumed by the sight of her sitting across from him.
"You're not eating, Ivy," Carmine noted quietly, setting his wine glass down on the white tablecloth. "Is the food not to your liking? I can have the chef executed immediately."
Ivy let out a breathless, nervous laugh, shaking her head. "Please don't execute the chef, Carmine. The food is... it's incredible. I've just never been to a place like this. It feels... unreal."
"Unreal," Carmine repeated, his dark obsidian eyes softening. He reached across the small table, sliding his large, warm hand over hers, his fingers interlocking with hers with absolute, possessive certainty. "This is your reality now, Ivy. No debt collectors, no broken apartments, no hiding in the dark. You are safe."
"I know," she whispered, turning her hand over to squeeze his fingers back. She looked around the opulent, candlelit room, the crystal chandeliers glittering overhead like fallen stars. "It's just... sometimes I feel like I'm living a borrowed life. Like I woke up inside someone else's fairy tale, and sooner or later, the clock is going to strike midnight, and I'll be back on the cold floor of that basement kitchen."
Carmine’s expression hardened instantly. He squeezed her hand tighter, his jaw clenching.
"The clock doesn't strike midnight for you anymore, Ivy," Carmine said, his voice dropping into a register so dark and lethal it made the romantic candles flicker. "I am the clock. And nobody touches what belongs to me."
A shiver—part fear, part intoxicating, dizzying desire—raced down Ivy’s spine. She knew the truth about the man sitting across from her. She knew he was a killer, a syndicate boss, a warlord who ruled the streets of Chicago with an iron fist and a loaded gun. She knew that loving him, or even letting him love her, was like dancing on the edge of a sheer cliff during a hurricane.
And yet, looking into his dark, fiercely protective eyes, she knew she had already fallen off the edge.
"I'm not afraid of you, Carmine," Ivy whispered, the words slipping out before she could stop them.
A slow, triumphant smile—rare, brilliant, and utterly devastating—spread across Carmine’s face. He stood up from his chair, walked around the table, and pulled Ivy up into his arms, lifting her slightly as his lips pressed down hungrily against hers.

The kiss wasn't gentle. It was a collision of two shattered worlds, a desperate, passionate claim of ownership and survival that tasted like red wine, smoke, and absolute, inescapable fate.
Outside the restaurant, the snow had finally stopped falling, leaving the glittering lights of Chicago to shine brightly against the cold spring night. But inside the candlelit room, the only light that mattered was the fire burning between them.
