Chapter 5 - The Red Fabric's Origin-5

The silence that settled over the executive lounge was suffocating, broken only by the low, mechanical click of Liam's phone as he laid it on the mahogany table beside the notebook. The screen displayed a real-time encryption interface, a series of green code lines scrolling down the terminal window at an incredible velocity.

"The data disks inside the prom dress lining were encrypted using an old 56-bit DES matrix from the late nineties," Liam explained, his voice entirely calm, stripping away any trace of the emotional teenager who had been crying at the podium an hour prior. He sat down in the chair beside me, his hazel eyes locking onto Ryan's face with a lethal, clinical focus. "To a standard corporate IT team, the disks look like corrupted audio files from an old high school theater production. But since I’ve been working the late-night diagnostics shift at the textile mill’s automated network hub... I had access to the legacy mainframe decrypters."

Ryan looked at the phone screen, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the edge of his water glass. "Liam... listen to me. You’re an intelligent young man. You have a valedictorian medal. You have a future. If you leak those files to the municipal police, the state regulators will freeze Vanguard Financial’s entire asset pool within twenty-four hours. The scholarship, the New Mexico house... the three million dollars I offered your mother... it all disappears into a federal holding account."

"You still think this is about money, Ryan," I said, a bitter, hollow laugh escaping my lips as I reached out and took my son's hand. "You spent nineteen years sitting in your glass tower, thinking that everyone has a price because your father bought your integrity for the price of a corporate seat. But my son didn't work three shifts a day at that mill to buy a house in New Mexico. He did it to buy the truth."

"The files have already been mirrored to a decentralized blockchain proxy network, Mr. Vance," Liam said, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying baritone that sounded exactly like his grandfather’s used to when he was balancing the mill accounts. "The master release trigger is hardwired to the Oakhill High School digital graduation portal. If I do not enter the administrative check-in token by midnight tonight, the server automatically broadcasts the raw ledger files—including the signatures of Thomas Vance and Dr. Harrison—to every major financial news outlet in the state."

Ryan’s breathing became short, ragged, a thin layer of sweat breaking out across his forehead as he looked at the digital clock on the lounge wall. 10:14 p.m. We had less than two hours before the automatic execution script would permanently dismantle his family's multi-million-dollar financial empire.

"What do you want, Liam?" Ryan whispered, his voice cracking with a sudden, primal desperation as his executive armor completely dissolved. "Name your terms. I’ll sign whatever authorization forms you need."

"First," Liam said, leaning forward until his face was just inches from his father's, "you are going to sign a full, unconditional civil confession regarding the bribery of Dr. Harrison and the forced expulsion of my mother in 2007. Second, your family's trust fund will issue a permanent, non-revocable endowment of twelve million dollars to establish the Sarah Owens Sanctuary for Single Mothers right here in the Oakhill district."

He paused, his eyes burning with a freezing, absolute clarity.

"And third... you are going to walk out into the main lobby of this hotel, where the local newspaper reporters are waiting for the valedictorian press conference... and you are going to tell them exactly why you were standing in the balcony tonight, hiding from the boy in the red dress."
