Chapter 5 - The Downfall of Julian Vance-5

The executive boardroom on the fiftieth floor of Mercer Tower was bathed in the harsh, blue-white light of a rainy Tuesday morning. Around the massive mahogany table sat the senior board members, looking nervously between Eleanor Mercer—who sat at the head of the table with her usual imperious posture—and Damien, who stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over the drenched city skyline.

Standing near the door, flanked by two corporate security officers, was Julian Vance.

Julian didn't look like the untouchable Chief of Financial Operations who had retired to the French Riviera five years ago. His tailored suit was slightly rumpled, his gray hair was uncombed, and a sheen of nervous sweat glistened on his forehead as he tried to catch Eleanor's eye.

"This is an absolute farce," Eleanor said, her voice cutting through the heavy silence of the room like a scalpel. She turned her cold, piercing gaze onto her son. "Damien, have you lost your mind? Dragging a retired executive back from Europe on the basis of some half-baked internal audit? The board has business to attend to—we are not running an inquisitorial tribunal for your personal mid-life crisis."

Damien turned slowly away from the window. He didn't look at his mother. Instead, his eyes locked onto Julian.

"It's not a half-baked audit, Mother," Damien said evenly, walking toward the head of the table. He tossed a thick binder in front of Julian. "It's a forensic accounting of every discretionary account managed under the Mercer family reserve between the fiscal years of 2020 and 2021. Specifically, the two-million-dollar wire transfer designated for a legal settlement with Mara Bennett."

Eleanor’s eyebrows arched slightly, though her composure remained intact. "The settlement was executed according to protocol. Miss Bennett signed the paperwork. The matter was closed."

"Except she never signed it," Damien said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, controlled register. He placed both hands on the table and leaned toward Julian. "Isn't that right, Julian? You filed the compliance report stating the funds were disbursed to Miss Bennett. But our forensic team tracked the secondary routing numbers. The money didn't go to a Boston brownstone. It went to an offshore holding company in the Caymans—registered under a dummy LLC that you created thirty days before your retirement."

Julian flinched, casting a frantic glance toward Eleanor. "Mrs. Mercer, you know I executed everything according to your instructions—"

"My instructions were to clear a liability," Eleanor snapped, her voice sharpening into a lethal edge as she realized the trap closing around her. "If Julian botched the administrative execution—"

"He didn't botch it, Mother. He stole it," Damien interrupted, slamming his hand down on the table. The sound echoed like a gunshot through the silent boardroom. "He embezzled two million dollars of corporate funds, forged a private citizen's signature, and used my mother's ruthless tactics as cover for his own white-collar crime. And to top it off, he let me believe for five years that I had paid off the woman carrying my children."

Gasps erupted around the boardroom. Several directors shifted uncomfortably in their seats, whispering among themselves.

Julian, realizing he had been thrown to the wolves by both sides, panicked. He pointed a shaking finger at Eleanor. "I only did what she wanted! She said make Mara Bennett disappear by any means necessary! The offshore account was a contingency fund authorized for Mercer family contingencies!"

"You lying parasite," Eleanor hissed, standing up from her chair with terrifying fury. "I never authorized the embezzlement of corporate reserves!"

"Quiet!" Damien’s voice boomed across the room, silencing them both instantly. He straightened his tie, his face completely devoid of emotion.

"The federal authorities have already been briefed," Damien continued, looking directly at Julian. "Federal marshals are waiting in the lobby. You can spend the next twenty years explaining to a federal judge whether my mother ordered the theft or whether you acted alone. Either way, your passport is revoked, your assets are frozen, and your retirement in the south of France is officially over."

Julian slumped against the security guard, his knees buckling slightly as the reality of his situation crashed down on him. Without a word, the security officers grabbed him by the arms and dragged him out of the boardroom, the heavy oak doors closing behind them with a definitive thud.

When the room fell silent again, Damien turned his gaze slowly to his mother.

For the first time in his life, Eleanor Mercer looked genuinely old. The armor of absolute control had cracked, revealing the fragile, ruthless architect beneath.

"You brought a criminal into our boardroom to humiliate me," Eleanor whispered, her voice trembling with venom. "You destroyed a thirty-year executive relationship over a common archivist who trapped you with a bastard child."

"She didn't trap me, Mother," Damien said, stepping right up to her chair and looking down into her eyes. "I trapped myself by listening to you. But that ends today."

"What is that supposed to mean?" she asked defensively.

"It means your influence over Mercer Enterprises is finished," Damien said, his voice cold and absolute. "Effective immediately, you are stepping down from the board of directors. Your office is being cleared out by noon. And if you ever—ever—attempt to contact Mara Bennett or my sons again, I won't just strip your corporate privileges. I will cut you out of the family legacy entirely."

May you like

Eleanor stared at him, her mouth opening slightly as she realized the monster she had created had finally turned its teeth on her. She had spent a lifetime teaching Damien how to be ruthless, how to protect the empire at all costs.

Now, he was using those exact lessons to destroy her.
