PART 18: THE PROTOCOL OF THE DEAD

PART 18: THE PROTOCOL OF THE DEAD

I walked to the console, my boots echoing sharply against the concrete floor. The air was frigid, kept at a constant temperature by the silent ventilation shafts hidden in the ceiling. The green monitor displayed a single prompt: ENTER KEY.

I picked up the old leather wallet. It was stiff, the corners cracked and covered in green mold from years of moisture. Inside, there were no credit cards, no money, no driver's licenses. There was only a single, silver coin—the one my grandfather had given me for my eighth birthday, the one he told me would buy my way out of any trouble if I kept it hidden.

I turned the coin over. Engraved into the silver edge, so small it was almost invisible to the naked eye, was a string of twelve alphanumeric characters.

"She didn't trust digital storage," I murmured, my breath forming a faint white cloud in the chilly room. "She knew that if the syndicates ever hacked the servers, they would look for an internal password. She put the key on the one thing she knew Daniel would never throw away."

"Ryan," Sarah said, her voice tight as she stood by the open door, her eyes fixed on the humming server racks. "If this network has been active all this time... who has been paying the electric bills? Who has been maintaining the solar arrays on the roof?"

"The trust," a voice spoke from the darkness behind the server racks.

We both whirled around.

A man stepped out into the faint green light of the monitors. He was thin, his face covered in a ragged gray beard, his clothes functional and dirty. He wore an old security jacket with the logo of the Caldwell Logistics firm torn off the breast pocket.

It was Thomas. The old night watchman from the main warehouse—the man who had supposedly retired to the coast five years ago after his wife died.

"Thomas?" I lowered the coin, my hand moving instinctively toward the crowbar I had left by the door.

"Don't be nervous, Ryan," the old man said, his voice flat, completely devoid of energy. "I’m not here to hurt you. I’m here because I promised your father I would stay until you arrived."

"Daniel knew about this place?" I asked.

Thomas nodded slowly, his eyes resting on the old wallet in my hand. "Daniel built the structure, Ryan. Helen built the network. They were partners long before they were enemies. When the split happened, they agreed to divide the vault. Helen kept the access coin, and Daniel kept the location secret."

"Then why did the old man call me three nights ago?" I demanded. "The one on the landline. He told me the syndicates were looking for this place."

Thomas let out a long, dry sigh that sounded like dead leaves dragging across concrete. "That wasn't the syndicates, Ryan. That was Arthur."

My blood went cold. Arthur. Alex’s father. The eldest brother who had supposedly died in the sanitarium twenty years ago.

"Arthur didn't die, Ryan," Thomas said, stepping closer to the console. "He’s been living in a private care facility in the mountains, funded by the automated transactions from these very servers. He’s the one who gave Alex the keys to the warehouse. He’s the one who orchestrated the collapse from his bed because he wanted his revenge on Daniel."

Thomas pointed a bony finger at the green screen. "The coin in your hand doesn't just unlock the data, Ryan. It executes the terminal protocol. It wipes the drives, deletes the backups, and disconnects the node from the main power grid forever. It ends the money trail that keeps Arthur alive."

I looked down at the silver coin. The twelve characters seemed to burn against my skin. If I entered the key, the old man in the mountains would die within days as his medical facility’s funding vanished. If I didn't, the network would keep processing the dirty money of a generation of ghosts, waiting for the next Alex to come looking for the keys.

"Ryan," Sarah whispered, her hand touching my arm. "Look at the screen."

The green prompt had changed. A countdown timer had appeared at the top of the monitor: 00:04:52.

Someone had initiated a remote override from outside the room. The vault was downloading.
