Chapter 13 - THE COLLAPSE OF THE DYNASTY

1

The blast wave tore through the root cellar, knocking dust, cobwebs, and loose timber raining down from the ceiling. The two security operatives froze mid-stride, momentarily disoriented by the sudden shockwave echoing from the upper floors of the manor.

“What the hell was that?” one of the operatives shouted, swinging his rifle toward the stairs.

“State police breach!” Detective Vance roared, seizing the opening with tactical precision. He fired two rapid shots upward, clipping the wooden banister and forcing the guards to scramble backward out of the line of fire.

“Move! Move!” I yelled, grabbing Claire’s hand and hauling her up the remaining cellar stairs, bursting out into the ground-floor hallway of the manor.

The main foyer was a scene of utter devastation. The heavy oak front doors had been blown inward, and thick clouds of grey smoke rolled across the polished marble floor. Through the haze, flashing blue and red emergency lights illuminated the silhouettes of state troopers pouring through the entrance, locking down the perimeter and engaging Evelyn’s remaining guards in a fierce firefight.

Evelyn was nowhere to be seen. In the confusion of the blast, she had retreated toward the grand staircase leading to the private upper levels.

“She’s heading for the rooftop helipad!” I shouted over the crackle of gunfire, pointing toward the sweeping oak stairs.

“Go!” Detective Vance ordered, firing a suppressing round down the east corridor as two guards rushed around the corner. “I’ve got the ground floor secured! Find your mother!”

I didn't hesitate. I pulled Claire close behind me, dodging past falling plaster and shattered crystal chandeliers as we sprinted up the grand staircase, leaving the chaos of the foyer far below.

The upper hallway was bathed in the red glow of emergency strobes. Doors to private suites stood wide open, revealing lavish rooms untouched by time, yet tainted by the pervasive corruption of the family that built them. At the very end of the hall stood a heavy steel fire door marked ROOF ACCESS / PRIVATE PENTHOUSE, fitted with a digital keypad lock.

The keypad was glowing green. Someone had just used an override code seconds before we arrived.

I threw my weight against the heavy steel door. It gave way with a loud metallic snap, swinging outward onto the cold, windy rooftop helipad.

The night air hit us like a wall of ice. Snow flurries had begun to swirl through the darkness, whipped up by the turbulent downdraft of a twin-engine executive helicopter idling on the concrete pad, its rotor blades spinning in a furious, deafening blur.

Standing near the open cabin door of the chopper was Evelyn.

Her tailored black coat whipped violently in the rotor wash, her silver hair flying wildly around her face. She was climbing into the passenger seat when she heard the steel door bang open behind her.

Evelyn paused, turning her head to look back across the helipad.

Through the roar of the engines, I stepped out onto the open concrete, my hand resting on the heavy wrench in my belt, my eyes locked directly onto hers.

“It’s over, Mother!” I shouted, my voice cutting through the wind. “The files are secured! The federal safe harbor is gone! There’s nowhere left to run!”

Evelyn didn't look afraid. Even against the howling wind and the spinning blades of the helicopter, she stood tall, a cruel, triumphant smile curving her lips.

“You think a helicopter is my escape, Arthur?” she yelled back, her voice carrying an eerie, unhinged resonance. “This estate isn't just a house. It’s the final vault. And if I can't keep the empire, no one will!”

Before I could process her words, Evelyn reached inside her coat, pulled out a heavy metal detonator box with a blinking red toggle switch, and slammed her thumb down onto the button.

For a terrifying second, nothing happened.

Then, deep beneath our feet, a series of muffled, subterranean explosions rumbled through the bedrock of Blackwood Ridge. The entire helipad shook violently beneath my boots, sending me stumbling backward against the ledge.

From the lower windows of the manor, thick tongues of orange flame erupted into the night sky, devouring the timber walls, the archives, and the decades of secrets buried within the stone.

Evelyn turned and dove into the helicopter cabin, slamming the door shut as the pilot pulled up collective, lifting the aircraft off the pad into the swirling snowstorm.

“Arthur! Look out!” Claire screamed, grabbing my arm and pulling me away from the edge as debris rained down around us.

I watched as the helicopter rose into the dark, stormy clouds, disappearing into the night like a ghost fleeing a burning kingdom. The fire behind us roared with an unstoppable fury, consuming the legacy of Silver Creek in a baptism of cleansing flame.

We had survived. But as I pulled Claire into my arms, sheltering her against the freezing wind and the smoke of our burning past, I knew that the true battle wasn't against the empire we had torn down—it was about what we would build from the ashes.
