Chapter 14 - Returning Home-14

Six months later, the spring thaw was finally turning the gray slush of Chicago into bright green shoots of grass.

I stood on the front porch of a modest, single-story house in a quiet neighborhood just twenty minutes from Thomas’s place in Evanston. It wasn't the old house with the pink wallpaper and the hidden mattress—that property had long since been sold and gutted by developers. This was a new beginning. A place with wide doorways, a sunny kitchen, and a guest suite with two very specific bedrooms waiting upstairs.

A moving van pulled up to the curb, and the back doors swung open with a heavy metallic rattle.

Lucas stepped out of the cab of the truck, wiping his hands on his jeans, grinning broadly as he carried a heavy wooden crate toward the front steps. Behind him, Claire stepped out of her own car, holding a potted fern and laughing as her husband Mark carried two large suitcases.

“You sure you’re up for this, Dad?” Lucas asked, setting the crate down on the porch and clapping a warm, strong hand onto my shoulder. “We can help you unpack every single box. You don't need to lift a finger.”

“I’m fine, Leo,” I smiled, using his childhood name with a lightness that still felt miraculous on my tongue. “My cardiologist cleared me for light supervisory duties. Besides, I have two professional architects and a marine engineer working pro bono. I think the house will survive.”

Claire walked up the steps, wrapped her arms around my waist, and pressed a kiss to my cheek, her eyes bright with happiness. “It’s good to be home, Dad. Even if home is a few decades late.”

“Better late than never,” I murmured, looking past them at the bright spring sky stretching endlessly overhead.

Inside the house, the sun streamed through clean, uncurtained windows, flooding the wooden floors with golden light. There were no ghosts hiding in the walls here, no locked doors, no rusted boxes buried in mattresses. Just open space, fresh air, and a family reunited against all odds.
