Chapter 4 - THE FALL OF THE PENTHOUSE EMPEROR

-1
The elite penthouse apartment on the sixty-seventh floor of the Sapphire Tower overlooking Central Park was supposed to be the undisputed temple of Bennett Finch’s triumphant reign. With floor-to-ceiling glass walls, imported Italian marble flooring, and an infinity pool overlooking the glittering expanse of the city, it was the ultimate trophy of a man who believed he had conquered Wall Street.
By 7:00 PM that evening, however, the temple had turned into a tomb of absolute panic.
Bennett burst through the private elevator doors of the penthouse, his silk tie ripped loose, his custom tailored suit jacket stained with sweat, and his breath coming in ragged, hyperventilating gasps. He had spent the last eight hours rushing from one corporate lawyer to another, only to be turned away by every single high-priced defense firm in the city the moment they ran a conflict check on Apex Global Holdings and realized his accounts were federally frozen.
"Margot!" Bennett roared, slamming the heavy mahogany front door behind him. "Margot, where the hell are you?!"
A door down the master hallway clicked open, and Margot stepped out, wearing a silk designer robe, her face masked in expensive anti-aging cream, holding a glass of white wine. She blinked sleepily, irritated by the violent disruption.
"Bennett, what on earth is wrong with you?" Margot snapped, taking a sip of her wine. "You're making a ridiculous amount of noise. And why are you home so early? Didn't you say you had a dinner meeting with the Japanese shipping investors?"
"The Japanese investors cancelled!" Bennett screamed, his voice cracking as he marched across the living room and grabbed a heavy crystal decanter, pouring himself three fingers of neat scotch with shaking hands. "In fact, the entire board of Finch Logistics has placed me on emergency suspension! My corporate card was declined at the parking garage, my personal bank accounts are locked tighter than a federal vault, and the U.S. Attorney's office is currently reviewing a comprehensive federal indictment with my name written all over it!"
Margot’s wineglass paused halfway to her mouth. The sleepy annoyance on her face instantly dissolved into a mask of sharp, defensive panic.
"Suspended?" Margot echoed, her voice pitching up shrilly. "What do you mean, suspended? You told me you were a senior partner! You told me you owned seventy percent of the shipping lanes! What about the penthouse? What about our trip to Monaco next month?"
"There is no Monaco, Margot!" Bennett yelled, slamming his glass down onto the marble coffee table so hard the amber liquid sloshed over the rim. "And there is no penthouse! This entire building—every square inch of it—is leased under a corporate subsidiary held by Apex Global Holdings. And do you know who the majority shareholder of Apex is?"
Margot stared at him, her eyes widening in sudden, dawning horror. "Your... your wife?"
"Tessa," Bennett hissed, his face twisting into an ugly mask of pure hatred. "My quiet, unassuming, pregnant wife who I thought was completely financially illiterate. She engineered the whole thing. She let me build the company, she let me secure the contracts, and then she pulled the rug out from under me with the precision of a master assassin."
Margot’s face flushed bright red. All the sweet, submissive affection she had figned for the past year vanished instantly, replaced by the cold, calculating fury of a gold-digger whose investment had just gone bankrupt.
"You absolute idiot," Margot hissed, stepping forward and pointing a manicured finger directly at his chest. "You told me she was a broke orphan from the sticks! You told me she had zero legal leverage! And now you're telling me we're broke?!"
"We aren't broke, I'm broke!" Bennett shouted back, losing whatever fragile grip he had left on his composure. "And you aren't getting another dime of my money, because I don't have any! So you can take your designer bags, strip off that silk robe, and get the hell out of my penthouse right now!"
"Your penthouse?!" Margot shrieked, letting out a harsh, hysterical laugh as she threw her wineglass against the floor, shattering the crystal into a thousand sparkling pieces. "I'm not the one sleeping with a sinking ship! You're finished, Bennett! The board is going to eat you alive, federal prison is going to chew you up, and I am not sticking around to watch you go down in flames!"
Before Bennett could retort, the heavy front door of the penthouse suddenly unlocked with a sharp, electronic click.
Both Bennett and Margot froze, their heads snapping toward the entryway.
The door swung open, revealing three towering federal marshals in tactical windbreakers, flanked by a building security supervisor holding a formal notice of possession.

"Bennett Finch?" the lead marshal announced, his voice echoing authoritatively through the cavernous living room as he stepped forward, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his tactical belt. "You are being placed under arrest for grand larceny, wire fraud, and systematic embezzlement of corporate pension funds. Step away from the furniture and place your hands behind your back."
Bennett stared at the silver handcuffs, his knees buckling beneath him. The billionaire titan of Finch Logistics—the man who had watched his pregnant wife fall to a hospital floor and told her not to be dramatic—crumpled against the edge of the marble coffee table, staring blankly at the floor as his empire officially vanished into thin air.
