Chapter 9 - The Summons in Miami

The legal noose tightened with terrifying speed. By Wednesday afternoon, federal marshals and local Florida law enforcement officers executed a formal service of process on Diane Whitmore at her sister’s upscale condominium in Boca Raton.
According to the confidential dispatch notes Marcus received from our legal team, Diane had answered the door expecting room service or a delivery from a luxury boutique. Instead, she was handed a thick envelope containing federal asset forfeiture notices, a civil grand larceny indictment, and a mandatory court appearance summons requiring her presence back in Ohio within ten business days to answer for the misappropriation of trust funds.
Natalie, who had flown down to Miami to escape the fallout in Columbus, found herself equally ensnared. Because her luxury flights, hotel stays, and shopping sprees over the previous six months had been funded directly through Diane’s embezzled trust accounts, Natalie’s personal bank accounts and credit lines were swept up in the federal freeze as beneficiaries of stolen property.
The digital silence that had settled over their social media accounts was suddenly broken by a flurry of frantic, panicked text messages sent directly to Ethan’s phone.
Ethan didn't even open them. He simply set his phone on “Do Not Disturb,” blocked their numbers permanently, and handed the device to Marcus to be forwarded straight to the prosecuting attorney’s evidence folder.
“They thought they were untouchable,” Ethan said to me as we stood together in the kitchen that evening, watching Robert and Mia happily playing a game of checkers in the living room. “They genuinely believed that because they wore the right clothes, lived in the right zip code, and looked down their noses at anyone who worked for a living, the rules of the world didn't apply to them.”
“People like that never think accountability applies to them until the gavel actually falls,” I said, resting my head against his shoulder. “Do you think she’ll actually come back to Ohio to face the charges?”

“She won't have a choice,” Ethan replied, his voice cold and resolute. “If she skips the court date, a federal bench warrant goes out immediately, and extradition proceedings will drag her back in handcuffs. Either way, Diane Whitmore is about to learn what it feels like to have zero control over her own life.”
For the first time in six years, the heavy, suffocating cloud that had hung over our marriage was completely gone. The holidays had started in violence, humiliation, and cruelty, but they were ending in clarity, truth, and unshakeable strength.
