Chapter 7 - THE SENTENCE THAT DIDN’T GIVE ME MY OLD LIFE BACK

-7

Luca received nine years.

Not life.

Not twenty-five.

Nine.

With credit and eligibility rules, actual custody could be less.

Some people told me:

“That’s all?”

Others:

“That’s too much. He didn’t mean to kill you.”

I stopped listening.

The sentence reflected multiple crimes.

Violent assault.

Evidence tampering.

Financial fraud.

Identity misuse.

The judge emphasized pregnancy and post-assault cover-up.

Luca stood before sentencing.

He apologized.

At first, the language was polished.

“I deeply regret the pain.”

Then the judge interrupted.

“What did you do?”

Luca swallowed.

“I pushed my wife.”

“Why?”

“Because she wouldn’t sign.”

There.

Simple.

No Wendy.

No Northgate.

No stress.

Then:

“I had lied to lenders.”

“Yes.”

“I thought if she signed, it would make everything okay.”

“And when she did not?”

“I panicked.”

Then judge:

“Did panic move your hand?”

Luca stared.

“No.”

“Who did?”

“I did.”

That mattered.

Then he looked at me.

“I’m sorry.”

I believed he was sorry.

That did not mean unsafe behavior disappeared.

Two truths.

Wendy’s sentence came separately.

She pleaded guilty to identity fraud conspiracy, obstruction/evidence tampering, and financial offenses. Because she had not physically assaulted me but had orchestrated significant fraud and cover-up, she received four years.

Her attorney argued age, cooperation, lack criminal record.

Judge considered.

Still prison.

At sentencing Wendy said:

“I thought protecting my son was motherhood.”

Then:

“I understand now I protected him from consequences until he became someone who thought other people’s boundaries were negotiable.”

That sentence hit.

Did she mean?

Maybe.

Then:

“I watched Jessi on floor and still thought first about Luca.”

She cried.

“I failed both women in that room—Jessi and my granddaughter.”

Grace.

Then she asked me forgiveness indirectly.

I did not answer.

Court not place.

Marco received eighteen months? He cooperated and nonviolent. Let's say 18 months home confinement + probation and restitution after pleading financial fraud conspiracy. Northgate employee? No criminal unless negligence. Lender paid regulatory fine/civil settlement.

Northgate reached agreement with me.

The guarantee declared void.

They waived all claims against Elmwood.

Paid portion legal fees and damages for negligent verification as confidential civil settlement.

I did not become rich.

Enough to cover legal/therapy and compensate identity harm.

Marino company liquidated.

Vendors recovered partial.

Employees moved.

Then divorce finalized.

Luca’s share of legitimate marital assets offset some restitution obligations? Family law handled separately.

Elmwood remained mine.

I kept my retirement.

Joint savings divided under agreement.

I did not strip him.

I wanted clean.

Then Grace’s custody.

Prison changed.

Luca could have visits through approved family visitation if I chose/court permitted.

Family court set structured contact.

Letters screened initially.

Video calls age-appropriate.

No Wendy while incarcerated due separate restrictions until later.

I struggled.

My friends thought I should cut forever.

Therapist asked:

“What does Grace need?”

Not:

What does Luca deserve?

At age one, she did not know.

At two, she recognized him on supervised video calls.

“Daddy.”

First time, I cried privately.

Not because reconciliation.

Because fatherhood existed separate from marriage.

Luca cried too.

He never again asked me to tell Grace I loved him.

His letters to Grace:

Pictures.

Simple stories.

No guilt.

He joined parenting program.

Anger-management.

Financial ethics course? Prison programs.

Could be performative.

Time shows.

Then one letter to me through attorney after two years:

I used to think if I could explain enough, you’d see why I did it. I don’t think there is a why that changes what I chose.

Good.

Then:

I am not asking you to forgive me. I am asking whether you will tell Grace, when appropriate, that what happened was not because of her pregnancy or because she was born.

That was responsible.

I agreed.

Grace would never carry:

Dad hurt Mom because baby.

No.

He hurt because control and fraud.

Her existence was not cause.

Then Wendy wrote from prison.

Long.

She described her mother raising her to believe sons needed protection, daughters-in-law should merge.

Not excuse.

She admitted jealousy of Dad.

Thomas had left me independent asset.

Wendy considered that insult to Luca.

“He was saying Luca wasn’t trustworthy.”

Maybe Dad was.

But even if, property was Dad’s choice.

Wendy wrote:

“I wanted to prove Thomas wrong after death.”

There.

She had turned my deed into competition with dead man.

Then:

“When you said no, I heard him saying no through you.”

Horrifying psychological truth.

I replied once:

“The house was never a vote on Luca’s worth. It was mine.”

She wrote:

“I know now.”

Then I decided about Elmwood.

One year after assault.

Dad’s rule.

Calm day.

I stood with Grace on porch.

I did not need house.

My current condo was safer, closer to work.

Elmwood carried memory.

I could rent.

Sell.

Keep.

I chose renovate lightly and rent to family through professional property manager? Or transform to women transitional housing? Too symbolic. Maybe simplest: keep and rent at market. But final ending maybe Grace grows there. Better I choose to move into it after renovation—reclaim without shrine.

I moved in with Grace.

Not because Dad demanded.

Because I wanted backyard.

Sunroom.

Neighborhood.

Mrs. Patel two houses down.

She brought casserole.

Cried seeing baby.

The kitchen where Dad once cooked? Wait assault occurred "our kitchen" likely home Luca/Jessi lived in, not necessarily father's house. Important. The stockpot incident was at marital home, not Elmwood. So Elmwood safe.

We moved there.

I changed nothing major except nursery.

Dad’s workshop became design studio.

The house Luca tried to own became place he did not control.

May you like

Not revenge.

Home.
