Chapter 11 - Rebuilding the Foundation

-1035-
With the Voss empire dismantled and its leadership facing decades in federal prison, the legal fallout required delicate navigation to ensure thousands of innocent dockworkers, sailors, and administrative staff weren't left destitute by Conrad's crimes.
That was where Julian stepped in.
Working closely with federal bankruptcy receivers and naval logistics commands, Julian organized a worker-led cooperative to acquire the legitimate commercial shipping assets of Voss Maritime Logistics, rebranding the company under a clean slate: the Pacific Horizon Shipping Group.
We met at a quiet harbor-front café overlooking Elliott Bay to review the transition documents.
"The federal judge approved the restructuring plan this morning," Julian said, sliding a thick binder across the wooden table with a tired but triumphant smile. "All four thousand innocent employees kept their jobs. The union backed us unanimously."
I scanned the summary pages, nodding in approval. "You did exceptional work, Julian. Your grandfather would have never given the workers a stake in the company. He viewed them as chess pieces. You viewed them as partners."
"I learned from the best," Julian replied, raising his teacup in a silent toast. "Or rather, I learned from someone who showed me what leadership actually looks like. Speaking of which... what happens next for you, Aunt Elise? Are you heading back to the Pentagon?"
"Not immediately," I said, gazing out at the container ships moving smoothly across the gray waters of the bay. "The Seventh Fleet needs a debrief on the Pacific interdiction operation, and the Senate Armed Services Committee requested my testimony regarding maritime security protocols next month. After that... I'm taking two weeks of accrued leave."
Julian raised an eyebrow. "Leave? You? I didn't know admirals even knew what that word meant."
"It means I'm going to visit your grandmother's grave," I said softly, a quiet peace settling over my features. "The real one. Not the memorial Conrad threw a massive public gala for just to impress his business associates, but the quiet little cemetery in Oregon where she actually rests."

Julian reached across the table, placing his hand over mine. "Can I come with you?"
"I'd like that, Julian," I smiled. "I'd like that very much."
