Chapter 11 - The Quiet Suburbs11 -

While the dining room of Aurelia rang with laughter and celebration, twenty miles away in the quiet, fading suburbs of Denver, another reality was playing out under the dim amber glow of a single streetlamp.

The small, beige-siding ranch house where we had grown up smelled faintly of boiled cabbage, cheap formula, and damp laundry.

Mallory sat at the wobbly kitchen table, her eyes red and swollen from crying, staring down at a stack of past-due utility bills and hospital collection notices spread across the formica surface. In the next room, the baby let out a sharp, piercing wail of hunger, but Mallory didn't move immediately. Her limbs felt heavy, leaden with an exhaustion that sleep could no longer cure.

The grand illusion was gone. There were no private jets to Maui, no executive penthouses overlooking the city skyline, no wealthy protectors to rescue her from the consequences of her own ambition.

She had traded her sister’s lifelong support, her dignity, and her future for a hollow promise whispered in a hospital room by a man who was now sleeping on a steel cot behind razor wire.

Mallory buried her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking with silent, bitter tears as the reality of her choices finally settled into her bones like winter frost.

She had wanted Clara’s life, but she didn't have Clara’s iron. And in the harsh, uncompromising world engineered by Loretta Sterling, weakness was a tax you always paid in full.
