Chapter 8 - The Confession of the Mercenary

-8-

My father strode over to the center of the ruined living room, his face dark and impassive as he looked down at the mercenary pinned to the floor by our tactical operatives. The man was struggling fiercely against his restraints, spitting blood onto the imported Persian rug, cursing in a harsh, guttural accent.

"Lift him up," my father commanded coldly.

Two operatives hauled the mercenary to his feet, shoving him roughly against the wood-paneled wall beneath a shattered oil painting. The man’s tactical mask had been ripped away, revealing a scarred, hard-bitten face belonging to a veteran of private military contracting outfits—men whose loyalty belonged exclusively to the highest bidder, regardless of nationality or morality.

My father walked up until he was standing inches from the mercenary’s face. He didn't raise his voice; he didn't need to. The quiet, terrifying menace radiating from him was more powerful than any physical violence.

"Who hired you?" my father asked.

The mercenary sneered, blood staining his cracked teeth. "Go to hell, old man. You don't know who you're messing with. The people behind us own half the corporate boardrooms in this city—"

Before the man could finish his sentence, my father struck him across the face with the heavy steel-reinforced grip of his pistol. The blow was swift, brutal, and entirely merciless. The mercenary collapsed back against the wall, gasping for air, spitting a mouthful of blood onto the floorboards.

"Let’s try this again," my father said, his voice as cold as absolute zero. "Who hired you? Was it Linda Whitmore?"

The mercenary blinked rapidly, tasting his own blood, the bravado finally draining out of his eyes as he looked into my father’s pitiless gaze. He realized instantly that my father wasn't a corporate executive who played by the rules of civil litigation; he was a predator who operated entirely outside conventional boundaries when his family was threatened.

"Not... not Linda," the mercenary choked out, his chest heaving. "She’s... she’s just a figurehead. A useful idiot who plays high-society games while the real power runs through the corporate trust."

I helped Daniel to his feet, wrapping my arm around his waist to steady him as he struggled to stand. He leaned heavily against me, his breathing shallow and erratic.

"What corporate trust?" I demanded, stepping closer to the prisoner. "Name names."

"The... the Apex Syndicate," the mercenary gasped, clutching his bruised jaw. "They’ve been shorting Whitmore Properties for months, quietly buying up distressed debt, positioning themselves to execute a hostile takeover of the entire family portfolio. Linda thought she was running the empire, but she was just a pawn. When your father called in those debt tranches this morning, it threatened to blow up the entire syndicate's timeline. They ordered us to eliminate anyone connected to the leak—starting with Daniel here, and moving on to you."

The pieces of the puzzle clicked together with terrifying clarity.

Linda wasn't just a snobby, vicious mother-in-law who threw wine in my mother's face; she was a unwitting puppet dancing on the strings of a ruthless corporate cabal that had been bleeding the Whitmore empire dry from the inside out for years. And when my father’s financial retaliation threatened to expose their multi-million-dollar fraud, the syndicate decided to eliminate the witnesses.

"Where is the syndicate's primary server node located in Chicago?" my father demanded, pressing the barrel of his pistol lightly against the mercenary's forehead.

"The... the old dry-dock facility down by the South Chicago harbor," the mercenary whispered, his eyes wide with stark terror. "Warehouse 14. That's where they run the offshore accounts and coordinate the extraction protocols."

My father pulled his pistol back, sliding it smoothly into his shoulder holster. He turned to Marcus, who stood by the shattered balcony doors monitoring the perimeter scanners.

"Marcus," my father said crisply. "Secure this prisoner in the lead armored transport. Inform our legal team to expedite the asset freeze across all known Apex Syndicate shell corporations. And prep the extraction team."

"Where are we going?" Daniel asked, wincing as he straightened his posture, his eyes burning with a sudden, fierce desire for retribution.

"We're going to pay a little visit to Warehouse 14," I said, my voice as cold as ice. "It’s time to shut them down permanently."
