Chapter 10 - THE ARRIVAL

-10-
The delivery room at Mount Sinai Hospital on the Upper East Side was bathed in soft, warm light, far removed from the cold, sterile clinical environments Natalie had associated with hospitals during her difficult fertility treatments.
The air was filled with the quiet hum of medical monitors and the gentle, encouraging voice of Dr. Lauren Bennett, who stood at the foot of the delivery bed with a calm, reassuring smile.
"You're doing incredible, Natalie," Dr. Bennett said, checking the fetal monitor. "One more strong push, and she'll be here."
Natalie gripped the side rails of the hospital bed, her knuckles white, sweat beading along her hairline. But beneath the physical exhaustion, there was a fierce, electric surge of adrenaline and unconditional love driving every ounce of her strength.
Standing right beside her, holding her hand with a grip that was surprisingly steady for a man who usually commanded courtrooms, was Arthur Sterling. He wore a sterile surgical gown over his bespoke suit, looking completely out of place yet fiercely determined not to leave his niece's side.
"Push, sweetheart," Arthur encouraged, dabbing a cool cloth across her forehead. "The Sterling-Hayes lineage is counting on you!"
Natalie let out a breathless, exhausted laugh, threw her head back, and pushed with every remaining ounce of energy she possessed.
The room filled with a sharp, piercing, beautiful sound—the loud, healthy cry of a newborn baby girl entering the world.
Dr. Bennett beamed, lifting the squalling infant up into the air, wrapping her in a warm green blanket before carefully placing her directly onto Natalie’s chest.
"Welcome to the world, little one," Dr. Bennett said softly.
Tears spilled over Natalie’s eyelashes, hot and fast, tracking down her cheeks as she looked down at the tiny, perfect face resting against her heart. The baby had a tuft of dark hair, perfectly formed little fingers, and a fierce, healthy pair of lungs that immediately quieted the moment she heard the sound of her mother’s voice.
"Hi," Natalie whispered, her voice cracking with overwhelming emotion as she brushed her finger against her daughter’s velvet cheek. "Hi, baby girl. I'm your mom. And I promise you... nobody is ever going to hurt you."
Arthur leaned over the bed, peering down at the infant with a look of profound, tearful wonder. He cleared his throat loudly, blinking rapidly to clear his own eyes.
"Well," Arthur said, his voice thick with emotion. "She definitely has the Sterling nose. And judging by the volume of that cry, she’s going to be running a Fortune 500 company by the time she's ten."
May you like
Natalie laughed, wrapping her arms securely around her daughter.
Her name was Clara. Clara Hayes. Named after strength, resilience, and a brand-new beginning that no corporate raider, no lying husband, and no courtroom lawyer could ever touch.
