Chapter 14 - The New Chapter-14

Six months later.
The Vance Estate was alive with the sound of laughter, soft jazz music, and chatter.
Linda was hosting the annual Autumn Gala for the Historic Preservation Society of the state—an event her parents had started thirty years ago, but which had been paused during her marriage to Christopher.
Over a hundred guests filled the grand gardens and illuminated reception rooms. Historic preservationists, city leaders, and old family friends gathered to celebrate the restoration of several historic landmarks in the city—a project funded by a generous $2 million donation from the newly formed Vance-Miller Foundation for Historical and Neurological Care.
Linda stood near the rose garden, holding a glass of champagne, talking with Arthur Vance and several board members. She looked radiant—relaxed, confident, and deeply at peace.
Across the lawn, sitting near the grand fountain surrounded by friends and medical specialists, was Julianne. Over the last six months, with intense physical therapy and speech rehabilitation, Julianne’s speech had improved remarkably. She no longer needed her tablet for simple conversations.
“Linda!” Julianne called out softly, her voice raspy but clear, waving her hand from the fountain bench.
Linda smiled, excused herself from the board members, and walked across the grass toward Julianne.
“How are you enjoying the party, Julianne?” Linda asked, sitting beside her on the stone bench.
“It is... wonderful,” Julianne said slowly, articulating each word carefully, a bright, beautiful smile on her face. “Your father... would be proud of this house.”
“My father would have loved you, Julianne,” Linda said warmly. “He always believed that a house isn't just made of wood and stone. It’s made of the truth of the people who live inside it.”
Julianne reached into her handbag and pulled out a small, velvet-covered box. She handed it to Linda.
“What is this?” Linda asked, looking down at the box.
“Open it,” Julianne said softly.
Linda lifted the velvet lid. Inside lay a breathtaking antique gold key on a silk ribbon—the original brass key to the front door of the Vance Estate, which Linda’s father had given to Christopher on their wedding day, and which the police had recovered from Christopher’s personal effects after his arrest.
“I had it restored,” Julianne said, her blue eyes shining with deep gratitude. “It belongs to you, Linda. Only you.”

Linda looked at the key, feeling a surge of emotion. She closed the velvet box, pulling Julianne into a warm, tight embrace.
“Thank you, Julianne,” Linda whispered. “For everything.”
