Chapter 13 - THE UNBREAKABLE PLEDGE

-13

Three months passed.

The Romano estate transformed in subtle, profound ways. The aggressive silence that had once defined the marble halls was replaced by a quiet, disciplined hum of corporate efficiency and human warmth. Mrs. Gable no longer glared at Tessa in the kitchens; in fact, the head cook now treated her with a grudging, highly respectful camaraderie. Paulie, though still suspicious of outsiders, greeted her with a respectful nod whenever she walked past him in the West Wing.

And Victor... Victor changed entirely.

The ruthless mafia boss who had once lived solely for ledgers, territory, and blood now found himself looking forward to the quiet evenings spent in his private study, listening to Tessa organize his library while discussing everything from ancient Roman history to modern financial markets. She wasn't just his assistant anymore; she had become his anchor, the one person in his violent world who saw past the myth of the monster to the man beneath.

It was late evening. A gentle spring rain tapped against the reinforced windows of the West Wing library.

Tessa stood on a rolling wooden ladder, shelving a heavy leather-bound volume on the top tier of the mahogany bookcase.

Below her, Victor stood reading a financial report, though his eyes drifted upward more often than not to watch her movements.

“Be careful on that ladder,” Victor warned, stepping closer as she reached for a high shelf.

“I’m fine, Mr. Romano,” Tessa laughed, standing on her tiptoes. “I’m not going to fall—whoa!”

The rolling ladder suddenly slipped an inch on the polished wood floor. Tessa wobbled, her foot losing purchase, and she gasped as she tipped backward off the step.

Before she hit the floor, strong arms caught her.

Victor had crossed the room with terrifying speed, cushioning her fall entirely against his chest. He staggered back a step under her weight, his uninjured arm wrapping securely around her waist to anchor her safely.

Tessa’s hands instinctively gripped the shoulders of his suit jacket. Her face was inches from his. She could feel the steady, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat beneath his shirt—the exact same heartbeat she had first listened to while using him as a pillow months ago.

Neither of them moved.

The air in the library grew thick, heavy with unspoken tension and undeniable chemistry.

Victor’s dark eyes searched her face, tracking the curve of her cheek, the soft parting of her lips, and the deep, trusting warmth shining in her eyes.

“You make it remarkably difficult to maintain professional boundaries, Tessa,” Victor murmured, his voice dropping into a low, rumbling register that sent a shiver down her spine.

May you like

“Maybe...” Tessa whispered, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs, “maybe I don't want you to maintain them anymore.”

Victor didn't hesitate. He closed the remaining distance, pressing his lips to hers in a slow, deliberate kiss that tasted of scotch, sandalwood, and absolute, unconditional surrender.
