Chapter 12 - The Trap in the Hangar-12

"You monster!" I shrieked, lunging at Clara, but Detective Vance and a state trooper grabbed my arms, holding me back as Clara was led down the hallway by her legal team, her laughter echoing off the high marble ceilings.

"Maya, calm down! Don't give her what she wants!" Detective Vance commanded, pulling me back into the alcove near the bench.

"She killed my mother!" I screamed, shaking violently in her grip. "She murdered my mother fifteen years ago!"

"And she is never walking out of a prison cell again," Detective Vance said firmly, holding my shoulders, forcing me to look at her. "Listen to me, Maya! The district attorney just rejected her immunity plea! They are not cutting a deal for a woman who committed premeditated murder and international trafficking!"

I took deep, shuddering breaths, trying to force my brain to function through the thick cloud of rage and grief. "They rejected it?"

"Yes," Detective Vance said. "The Zurich safety deposit box was raided by Swiss authorities an hour ago under a federal warrant. We already have the physical evidence: the original wire transfers to the mechanic, the tampered brake assembly photos, and Marcus’s signed ledger entries from 2011. We don't need Clara’s testimony to convict her of Ellen’s murder. She’s facing life without parole or the death penalty."

My father let out a long, ragged gasp, dropping back onto the wooden bench, clutching his chest.

"Dad!" I knelt beside him, checking his pulse. His skin was pale, sweat glistening on his forehead. "Dad, stay calm, please!"

"I... I let her into our house, Maya..." my father sobbed, clutching his heart. "I let the woman who murdered your mother sleep in our home... live in our lives..."

"It wasn't your fault, Dad," I wept, rubbing his back. "She was a devil. She tricked everyone."

Detective Vance’s phone buzzed sharply in her hand. She answered it, listened for three seconds, her expression hardening into stone.

"Understood. We're on our way," she said, hanging up. She looked at me. "Marcus just broke barricade at the airfield. He took a vehicle and is heading north on Highway 101. Federal agents are in pursuit, but he’s making a run for a secondary private strip in Ventura."

"Why Ventura?" I asked, a sudden, dark intuition striking me.

Detective Vance checked her tablet. "According to property records we seized from Marcus’s server... Clara owns an unregistered coastal estate in Ventura. A house listed under an old alias: Ellen Vance."

My jaw dropped. "She used my mother's name?!"

"It's where she kept her off-grid liquid reserves and secondary medical supplies," Detective Vance said, pulling her sidearm from her holster to check the magazine before snapping it back into place. "Marcus isn't just trying to escape the country. He’s heading there to clean out the safe before he flees."

I stood up, my eyes burning with a fierce, absolute determination. "I'm coming with you."

"No, Mrs. Miller, absolutely not," Detective Vance insisted. "This is a tactical federal operation—"

"My husband’s skin is on her stomach," I said, my voice dropping to a terrifying register of quiet fury. "My mother’s blood is on her hands. My daughter’s life was on her ledger. I am coming."

May you like

Detective Vance looked at my eyes, seeing the absolute impossibility of stopping me. She let out a long breath. "You stay in the back of my vehicle. You do not step out until the scene is secure. Do you understand me?"

"I understand," I said.
