CHAPTER 4: THE THINGS THAT HOLD

At the hospital, they said concussion.

Bruising.

Observation overnight.

Words that sounded clinical but meant someone had crossed a line that could have ended differently.

Sarah sat in the chair beside the bed, staring at her hands like they belonged to someone else.

“I didn’t know what to do,” she said eventually.

I believed her.

That was the problem.

People don’t always choose cruelty. Sometimes they inherit fear so deeply they mistake it for normal.

Lily slept between us, one hand still wrapped around my finger like a lifeline she refused to release.

Outside, rain started tapping the window.

Soft. Continuous.

My phone buzzed once.

Alex: “Charges are filed. Video is solid. No bail yet.”

I didn’t reply right away.

Because Sarah had started crying quietly, and this time she wasn’t trying to hide it.

“I grew up like that,” she said. “You just… don’t speak. You don’t make it worse.”

I looked at her.

“Not speaking didn’t stop it,” I said.
