PART 3: THE MEN WHO ARRIVED TOO QUICKLY

Three hard knocks echoed through the house.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The silence felt suffocating.
Thomas stared toward the front door.
Beatrice instinctively grabbed Leo's shoulder.
Chloe's heart hammered against her ribs.
Because she knew.
She absolutely knew.
Whoever stood outside had not arrived by coincidence.
Not after ten years.
Not minutes after Daniel's video revealed names powerful enough to destroy careers.
The knock came again.
Louder.
More demanding.
Thomas slowly stood.
"Stay here."
But Chloe immediately shook her head.
"No."
Her voice was firm.
Stronger than it had been when she was nineteen.
"Don't open it."
Thomas frowned.
"Why?"
Chloe looked toward the window.
The black SUV remained parked across the street.
Engine running.
Dark windows.
Watching.
Waiting.
"They followed us."
The room froze.
"What?"
"They followed our bus from Chicago."
Beatrice's face drained of color.
"You never told us."
"I wasn't sure."
Leo looked confused.
"Mom?"
Chloe forced a smile.
"It's okay."
It wasn't okay.
Not even close.
Outside.
Two men sat inside the SUV.
Both wore expensive suits.
Neither looked like law enforcement.
The older man checked his watch.
"They're taking longer than expected."
The younger man nodded.
"Maybe they already watched it."
The older man's expression darkened.
"Then we're already behind."
He picked up his phone.
A single text message appeared.
RECOVER THE FILES.
Nothing else.
No signature.
No explanation.
None needed.
Because both men understood exactly who sent it.
And exactly what failure would cost them.
Inside the house, Thomas approached the curtains carefully.
He peeked through a small opening.
His stomach tightened.
The vehicle wasn't familiar.
The men weren't familiar.
But something about them felt wrong.
Very wrong.
The older man looked directly toward the window.
As though he knew someone was watching.
Thomas immediately stepped back.
Years working around dangerous machinery had sharpened his instincts.
And every instinct screamed the same warning.
Danger.
The doorbell rang.
Long.
Continuous.
Aggressive.
Leo flinched.
Beatrice wrapped an arm around him.
The boy looked frightened now.
Not because he understood the conspiracy.
Because adults only become this scared when something is genuinely wrong.
Then a voice came from outside.
"Ms. Chloe Bennett?"
The room froze.
Nobody used that surname anymore.
Not officially.
Not for years.
The voice continued.
"We'd like to ask a few questions."
Thomas looked at Chloe.
"Who are they?"
"I don't know."
But she suspected.
And the possibility terrified her.
Ten years earlier.
Three days before Daniel vanished.
He arrived at Chloe's apartment carrying a cardboard box.
She remembered every detail.
The rain.
The exhaustion in his face.
The fear in his eyes.
At first she thought he was sick.
Then she noticed his hands shaking.
"Daniel?"
He immediately locked the door behind him.
Then closed every curtain.
Every blind.
Every window.
Only afterward did he speak.
"Listen carefully."
The seriousness in his voice frightened her.
Daniel opened the box.
Inside sat folders.
Photographs.
USB drives.
Documents.
Hundreds of pages.
"What is all this?"
Daniel looked directly at her.
"If something happens to me..."
Chloe instantly interrupted.
"Nothing is going to happen."
But Daniel wasn't smiling.
Because he already knew.
Something had started moving against him.
Something powerful.
Something organized.
Someone had accessed his office.
Someone had searched his apartment.
Someone had followed his car.
The signs were impossible to ignore.
Then he handed Chloe a yellow folder.
The same folder now sitting on her parents' dining table.
"If I disappear..."
His voice cracked.
"...protect this."
At the time, Chloe thought he was being dramatic.
Now she knew better.
Back in the present.
Another knock.
This time harder.
Then came a new voice.
"Mr. Thomas Bennett."
The room became still.
They knew his name too.
Not surprising.
Yet somehow deeply unsettling.
The older man outside continued.
"We represent people who worked with Daniel Mercer."
Lie.
Every instinct told Chloe it was a lie.
Daniel trusted very few people during those final weeks.
And certainly not strangers arriving ten years later.
Then Thomas noticed something.
The men never mentioned police.
Never mentioned investigators.
Never showed identification.
They only wanted conversation.
Or perhaps access.
Access to the house.
Access to the evidence.
Access to the folder.
Suddenly a phone rang.
Everyone jumped.
It was Chloe's phone.
An unknown number.
The timing felt impossible.
She answered cautiously.
"Hello?"
The voice on the other end spoke immediately.
"Do not open that door."
Chloe froze.
The room froze.
The caller continued.
"They're not who they claim to be."
Her pulse quickened.
"Who is this?"
The voice hesitated.
Then answered.
"Someone Daniel trusted."
Click.
The line disconnected.
The room erupted with questions.
"Who was that?"
"What did they say?"
Chloe explained quickly.
Nobody liked the answer.
Because it confirmed their fears.
Someone wanted the files.
Badly.
Then things became worse.
Much worse.
Leo wandered toward the living room window.
Curious.
Before anyone could stop him, he peeked outside.
The older man in the SUV saw him.
Immediately.
And smiled.
Not a friendly smile.
A calculating one.
The kind adults use when they recognize leverage.
Chloe's blood ran cold.
She rushed forward and pulled Leo away from the window.
"Mom!"
"Stay away from the glass."
Her voice came out sharper than intended.
Leo immediately knew something was wrong.
Very wrong.
And for the first time since arriving in Albany...
He became afraid.
Meanwhile.
Across town.
A woman stepped out of a taxi carrying a leather briefcase.
She was in her early forties.
Dark hair.
Sharp eyes.
Professional posture.

She walked directly toward a government building.
Inside the briefcase sat copies of Daniel's files.
Copies nobody knew existed.
Not Chloe.
Not Thomas.
Not even the men in the SUV.
The woman approached the reception desk.
"I need to speak with federal investigators."
The receptionist looked confused.
"What regarding?"
The woman placed a photograph on the counter.
Daniel Mercer.
Alive.
Smiling.
The receptionist's expression changed immediately.
The woman leaned forward.
Then quietly said:
"I know who ordered his disappearance."
Back at the house.
The black SUV finally moved.
Not away.
Closer.
It rolled slowly toward the driveway.
The engine remained running.
The older man stepped out.
Six feet tall.
Gray suit.
Polished shoes.
Expensive watch.
The appearance of a successful businessman.
But his eyes told a different story.
Cold.
Careful.
Dangerous.
Thomas watched through the curtain.
Then quietly reached for his phone.
"Who are you calling?"
"The police."
The older man outside seemed to realize exactly what was happening.
His smile disappeared.
Then he pulled out his own phone.
Spoke briefly.
And returned to the vehicle.
Seconds later the SUV drove away.
Everyone released a breath.
Until Chloe noticed something.
A white envelope lying on the front porch.
It hadn't been there before.
The SUV had left it.
A message.
A warning.
Or both.
Thomas retrieved it carefully.
No return address.
No name.
Nothing.
Just one sheet of paper.
Five words typed in black ink.
The room read them together.
And immediately fell silent.
Because the message contained only a single sentence:
Daniel Mercer was never the target.
Leo frowned.
"I don't understand."
Neither did anyone else.
At least not immediately.
Then Chloe's eyes widened.
Her breathing stopped.
Because suddenly she remembered something Daniel said the night he gave her the yellow folder.
Something she had never fully understood.
Something she dismissed because it sounded impossible.
At the time, Daniel had looked terrified.
Not for himself.
For someone else.
And his exact words came rushing back.
"If they realize who the baby is, they'll never stop looking."
The room became silent.
Thomas stared at her.
Beatrice stared at her.
Even Leo stared at her.
Because everyone suddenly understood the horrifying implication.
Daniel wasn't protecting himself.
He had been protecting the unborn child.
Leo.
And somewhere, after ten years of silence, someone had finally discovered what Daniel knew all along.
The secret wasn't hidden inside the files.
The secret...
May you like
Was Leo himself.
