PART 2 — THE WOMAN BEHIND THE CURTAIN

For the first time in years, I was afraid.
Not of Richard.
Not of Jessica.
Not even of the lawsuit threatening to tear Hawthorne Meridian apart.
I was afraid because I had finally started seeing the shape of something much larger.
Something older.
Something that had been hiding in plain sight for years.
And every trail seemed to lead back to one person.
Margaret Hawthorne.
My mother-in-law.
The woman who preached family values while quietly poisoning every relationship around her.
The woman who insisted I remain silent.
The woman who constantly spoke about heirs.
The woman who had welcomed Jessica into our lives with alarming enthusiasm.
The woman who never once asked a simple question.
If Richard's children mattered so much...
Why had she never requested a DNA test?
The answer came three days later.
And it changed everything.
I arrived at Daniel Mercer's office shortly after sunrise.
The city was still waking up.
Traffic lights blinked lazily through the morning haze.
Coffee shops filled with commuters.
Normal life continued.
Meanwhile, my marriage was becoming the centerpiece of a corporate scandal.
Daniel slid a folder across his desk.
"You need to see this."
I opened it.
Private investigator reports.
Bank records.
Property transfers.
Photographs.
My stomach tightened.
The deeper I looked, the worse it became.
Jessica Bennett wasn't simply Richard's secretary.
She wasn't merely his mistress.
For almost eight years, she had received monthly payments from a trust account.
A very large trust account.
The source?
Margaret Hawthorne.
I looked up.
Daniel nodded.
"Every month."
"How much?"
"Thirty thousand dollars."
I blinked.
"Thirty thousand?"
"Every month."
My hands tightened around the file.
That wasn't support.
That wasn't generosity.
That was employment.
Jessica wasn't being rewarded.
She was being paid.
Which meant one terrifying possibility.
Jessica had never accidentally entered Richard's life.
She had been placed there.
"Why?"
The question escaped my lips before I could stop it.
Daniel leaned back.
"That's what we're trying to figure out."
I stared at the numbers.
Eight years.
Thirty thousand dollars per month.
Millions transferred through hidden accounts.
Nobody spends that kind of money without a reason.
Then I noticed another document.
An apartment lease.
Luxury penthouse.
Downtown.
Paid entirely through a shell company.
The shell company traced back to Margaret.
Another document.
Private school tuition.
Covered by the same account.
Another.
Luxury vehicles.
Another.
Vacation properties.
Another.
Medical expenses.
Every road led to the same destination.
Margaret.
Margaret.
Margaret.
It was as though she had spent years building Jessica's life.
Financing it.
Protecting it.
Preparing it.
But why?
That afternoon, Richard called.
For the first time in our marriage, he sounded genuinely frightened.
"Lauren."
His voice was strained.
"Can we meet?"
Normally I would have refused.
Instead, I agreed.
An hour later we sat across from each other in a quiet restaurant.
He looked terrible.
Dark circles.
Unshaven.
Exhausted.
The confident executive who once commanded entire boardrooms seemed gone.
In his place sat a man who finally understood what uncertainty felt like.
He didn't order food.
Neither did I.
For several minutes, he simply stared at the table.
Then he spoke.
"My mother knew."
I wasn't surprised.
"What makes you say that?"
He laughed bitterly.
"Because I confronted her."
That got my attention.
"And?"
His jaw tightened.
"She wasn't shocked."
Not surprising.
"What was she?"
Richard's eyes lifted.
"Angry."
A chill traveled through me.
Angry wasn't the expected reaction.
Confused would be expected.
Concerned would be expected.
Angry suggested something else.
Something dangerous.
"What did she say?"
Richard's expression darkened.
"She told me to stop asking questions."
The words hung between us.
I already knew Margaret.
Questions were the one thing she hated most.
Especially questions she couldn't control.
Then Richard said something that made my pulse quicken.
"She threatened me."
"What?"
"She said if I kept digging, I'd destroy the family."
I leaned back.
Interesting.
Very interesting.
Because innocent people don't threaten exposure.
They welcome investigation.
Guilty people fear it.
That night, I received a call from an unknown number.
Normally I would ignore it.
Something made me answer.
A woman's voice greeted me.
Soft.
Nervous.
Afraid.
"Mrs. Hawthorne?"
"Yes."
"My name is Evelyn."
I didn't recognize it.
"I used to work for Margaret."
Now I was listening.
"What can I do for you?"
Silence.
Then:
"I think people are in danger."
The room suddenly felt colder.
"What do you mean?"
Another silence.
Longer this time.
Finally she whispered:
"The children."
My heartbeat accelerated.
"What about them?"
Her answer made my blood run cold.
"They aren't the first."
I sat up immediately.
"What?"
"You need to understand."
Her voice trembled.
"Jessica wasn't the first woman."
Every instinct sharpened.
Every sense focused.
"What are you talking about?"
Evelyn began crying.
Not loudly.
Quietly.
The kind of crying that comes from carrying something too long.
"There were others."
I couldn't speak.
Others?
How many others?
Why?
Then she answered the question before I asked.
"Five."
The number hit me like a punch.
Five.
Five women.
Five relationships.
Five possible victims.
Before Jessica.
Before me.
Before anyone realized what was happening.
I gripped the phone tighter.
"What happened to them?"
Silence.
Then:
"They disappeared."
The words landed heavily.
Not literally disappeared.
I knew what she meant.
Lives destroyed.
Careers ruined.
Relationships shattered.
Women pushed aside once their usefulness ended.
Then Evelyn delivered the sentence that changed everything.
"Margaret was looking for something."

My pulse accelerated.
"What?"
Another pause.
Then:
"A child."
The room became completely silent.
A child.
Not grandchildren.
Not heirs.
A specific child.
Suddenly pieces began moving into place.
Margaret's obsession.
The affairs.
The pregnancies.
The financial support.
The secrecy.
The manipulation.
She wasn't searching for descendants.
She was searching for someone.
The question was who.
Then Evelyn revealed the truth.
And the truth was stranger than anything I imagined.
Years earlier, Richard's father had hidden a secret.
A massive secret.
One Margaret spent decades trying to bury.
According to Evelyn, there was another heir.
A child born outside the marriage.
A child whose existence threatened the entire Hawthorne inheritance structure.
A child who vanished shortly after birth.
Officially, no records existed.
Unofficially...
Margaret never stopped searching.
Because if that child ever surfaced, control of enormous family assets could change overnight.
I felt my stomach tighten.
This wasn't about Richard.
It wasn't about Jessica.
It wasn't about me.
Not originally.
This story began decades before I entered the family.
Then Evelyn said something that nearly stopped my heart.
"There's something else."
Of course there was.
There always was.
"What?"
The answer came softly.
Almost apologetically.
"Margaret believes she found the child."
The air seemed to leave the room.
"When?"
"Years ago."
I swallowed.
"Who?"
Evelyn's voice broke.
Then she whispered the name.
"My God..."
Because the name wasn't Jessica.
It wasn't Richard.
It wasn't one of the children.
It was mine.
Lauren.
According to Margaret's private records, I wasn't chosen because Richard liked me.
I wasn't chosen because we fell in love.
I wasn't chosen because of coincidence.
Margaret believed I was the missing heir.
The child she had spent decades searching for.
The child connected to the fortune.
The child connected to the secret.
The child connected to everything.
Suddenly my entire marriage looked different.
Every introduction.
Every opportunity.
Every "chance" encounter.
Every moment.
Had I been targeted?
Selected?
Managed?
The realization made me sick.
Then Evelyn spoke one final sentence.
A sentence that explained everything.
"Richard was never supposed to fall in love with Jessica."
I froze.
"What?"
"He was supposed to marry you and stay married."
The silence that followed felt endless.
Because for the first time, I understood the horrible possibility.
Jessica wasn't Plan A.
Jessica was Plan B.
A backup.
A contingency.
A weapon.
And if that was true...
Then someone had been manipulating all of us from the very beginning.
The question was why.
Unfortunately, the answer was already on its way.
Because at that exact moment, investigators were opening a safety deposit box registered under Margaret Hawthorne's name.
Inside was a sealed envelope.
And a DNA report.
A DNA report that would reveal who I truly was.
May you like
And why Margaret had spent nine years trying to keep me trapped inside the Hawthorne family.
