Chapter 9 - The Scent of Lavender-9

The rain had completely stopped by the time Special Agent Harris and Victor stepped out onto the granite steps of the federal courthouse. The afternoon sun broke through the heavy gray clouds over Kansas City, painting the skyline in a bright, vibrant gold that felt like a permanent baptism for my family's future.

Elise walked down the steps slowly, drawing a deep breath of the clean, cool autumn air into her lungs. Her chest didn't hurt anymore. The phantom weight of her marriage to Wesley Hartman was completely gone, replaced by an absolute, unyielding sense of independent peace.

"What did he say to you in there, Elise?" Victor asked, wrapping his broad arm around her shoulder with a warm, professional respect as they walked toward his command vehicle at the curb.

"Nothing that matters anymore, Victor," Elise said, her voice completely calm, devoid of any anger or hatred. "He’s a ghost now. A ghost haunting a concrete cell."

"We’re going home, Elise," Agent Harris said, opening the rear cabin doors of her high-performance SUV, her face carrying the quiet satisfaction of a long investigation finally finalized. "To the valley cottage. Clara is waiting for her mother."

"Not home yet," a sharp, clear voice spoke from the shadow of a marble pillar at the base of the courthouse steps.

We—sorry, Elise and Victor stopped, their bodies tensing instinctively. Stepping out from the shadows was Julianna Croft—the daughter of Senator Julian Croft, the chairman of the State Urban Development Committee. She wasn't in handcuffs, and she wasn't wearing an inmate jumpsuit. She wore a flawless beige trench coat, her dark hair perfectly styled, a sleek leather briefcase in her hand. Beside her stood two men in sharp dark suits with earpieces—private security, not federal marshals.

"Julianna," Agent Harris growled, stepping between Elise and the Senator's daughter, her hand instinctively dropping toward her holstered service weapon. "The state judicial committee finalized your family's asset liquidations three hours ago."

"They did," Julianna smiled, a cool, untouchable expression that radiated absolute political immunity. "Until forty-five minutes ago, when my father’s legal team finalized a separate immunity agreement with the Department of Justice. In exchange for his testimony against the corporate board of the Nicosia syndicate, all charges against me have been permanently dropped. I’m a free woman, Agent Harris."

She walked slowly down the steps, her high heels clicking sharply against the granite until she stood just three feet away from us.
