Chapter 14 - The New King of the Grid-14-

Three days later, the private airstrip outside Chicago hummed with the quiet, turbine whine of a sleek, black Gulfstream G650. The morning sun reflected off the polished metal fuselage, casting a blinding glare across the tarmac as rain began to spit from the low-hanging clouds overhead.

Adrian stood at the bottom of the aircraft’s folding stairs, wearing a tailored black overcoat, his expression carved from absolute granite.

Behind him, parked along the edge of the tarmac, were three armored black SUVs. Grace stepped out of the lead vehicle, holding Lily tightly against her chest, while Emma walked beside her clutching her patched gray rabbit. Miller and four veteran guards flanked them, keeping a watchful eye on the perimeter.

Adrian walked back to meet them, stopping a few feet away.

“Is everything packed?” Adrian asked softly, looking down at Lily, who reached out a tiny hand to touch the lapel of his coat.

“Everything,” Grace said, her voice steady and filled with a quiet, profound resolution. She looked up at the private jet, then back at Adrian. “Where are we going, Adrian? Truly?”

“Switzerland first,” Adrian replied calmly. “Then a private estate in the Swiss Alps, completely secured, staffed by people whose loyalty was bought and verified decades ago. The Directorate has been restructured. The global network is now under our direct control. No one will ever find you there.”

Grace let out a slow, steady breath, a quiet sense of peace finally settling over her features. She had lived in fear for eight months, hiding a stolen baby in a cramped apartment, terrified of the shadows. Now, she was stepping into a world of absolute, unassailable power—shielded by the most dangerous man alive.

“And you?” Grace asked. “Won't you be joining us?”

“Soon,” Adrian said, gently brushing a finger against Lily’s cheek. “I have one final meeting in Zurich to finalize the transition of the Directorate's assets. Once the global shipping routes and financial ledgers are fully transferred under Vale International, I’m stepping away from the daily operations. I’ll meet you in the Alps before the first snow.”

Grace nodded slowly, knowing better than to argue. She leaned forward, pressing a quick, affectionate kiss to Adrian’s cheek.

“Don't keep us waiting too long, Mr. Vale,” she whispered with a faint, rare smile.

“I never do,” Adrian replied.

He watched as Grace climbed the stairs into the aircraft, settling into the luxurious leather cabin with Lily and Emma. A flight attendant closed the heavy hatch, sealing them inside the pressurized, secure environment.

A few moments later, the Gulfstream’s jet engines spooled up to a deafening roar, taxiing down the runway before lifting gracefully into the gray Chicago sky, punching straight through the clouds toward the Atlantic.

Adrian stood on the tarmac long after the jet vanished from sight, watching the empty sky with steady, unblinking eyes.

He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out the metallic flash drive containing the roster of the Directorate—the keys to the global underworld.

The war that had started eight months ago in a bloody ambush on a quiet service road had finally come to an end. But the man who had survived it was no longer the man who had buried Evelyn. He was something far greater, far more dangerous, and entirely untouchable.

He turned around, walked toward his waiting SUV, and tapped the driver’s partition.

“To the downtown terminal,” Adrian commanded quietly. “We have a global empire to run.”
