Chapter 8 - The Web Unravels-8

The heavy mahogany door of Dr. Vance’s office burst open. Four armed federal agents clad in dark blue vests with FBI emblazoned across their chests swept into the room, guns raised.
“Dr. Julian Vance! Put your hands on your head and step away from the desk!” the lead agent shouted.
Vance’s knees buckled. The sophisticated, untouchable physician collapsed into his leather chair, his face grey, his lips trembling. Within seconds, agents had pinned his arms behind his back, clicking heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.
Detective Marcus Miller walked into the room right behind the agents, holding a stack of federal arrest warrants. He looked at Abigail and gave a firm, respectful nod. “Perfect execution, Mrs. Riley. The state financial task force just froze all of Vance’s offshore accounts.”
“What about Spencer?” Abigail asked, her voice tight with anxiety.
“The medical team at St. Jude moved in at exactly 9:30,” Miller replied. “They’ve detached his IV, secured his blood samples, and transferred him to a secure military medical facility downtown. He’s safe from the toxins now.”
“Did he say anything?”
Miller hesitated for a second. “He was confused and furious. He demanded to speak to his lawyer—and the first phone call he tried to make was to Brenda Croft.”
Abigail closed her eyes, taking a long, shuddering breath. Even when surrounded by federal agents, Spencer’s first thought wasn't his mother; it was his accomplice.
“Where is Brenda Croft now?” Abigail asked, opening her eyes.
“Agents intercepted her sports car five minutes ago on the interstate,” Miller said. “She had two packed suitcases and $50,000 in cash in her trunk. She was heading toward the private airfield in County Line.”
“And Richard Sterling?”
Miller’s face darkened. “Sterling’s office downtown is currently being raided, but Sterling wasn't there. He received an encrypted tip-off three minutes ago from someone inside the courthouse. He’s vanished.”
Abigail’s heart dropped. “Vanished? How could he vanish?”
“Sterling is a veteran defense lawyer with deep connections to organized crime,” Miller explained calmly. “He always keeps a backup plan. But don't worry, Mrs. Riley. Federal marshals have issued a Red Notice. Every airport, border crossing, and marina is locked down. He can’t get far.”
Abigail walked over to Dr. Vance, who was being hauled to his feet by two agents. The arrogant doctor was now trembling uncontrollably, sweat pouring down his forehead.
“Where did Sterling go?” Abigail asked him directly, her tone cold enough to freeze water.
Vance shook his head frantically. “I don't know! I swear I don't know! Sterling runs everything through private servers! If he finds out I talked to the FBI, he’ll have me killed in prison!”
“You should have thought about that before you started poisoning innocent people, Vance,” Miller growled, shoving the doctor toward the door.
As the agents led Vance away, Naomi walked into the office, carrying a encrypted flash drive. Her face was flushed with emotion.
“We got it all, Mrs. Riley,” Naomi said, handing the drive to Miller. “Every ledger, every fake prescription, every insurance policy Sterling and Vance created over the last twelve years. It’s all here.”
Abigail looked at the young woman who had risked everything to bring down her sister’s killer. She reached out and took Naomi’s hand, giving it a gentle squeeze. “Thank you, Naomi. You saved my son’s life... even if he didn't deserve it.”

“What will you do now, Mrs. Riley?” Naomi asked softly.
Abigail looked at her watch. “Now, I’m going to go talk to my son. It’s time he finally hears the truth.”
