Chapter 11 - The Digital Vault

-11-
The offices of Vance, Sterling & Cole were dark, quiet, and smelling strongly of stale black coffee and ozone. Though the federal raid earlier that morning had disrupted the firm's main operations, Marcus Vance’s private basement archives—hidden behind a biometric security door in the sub-level parking garage—remained completely untouched by the DOJ investigators upstairs.
Ethan sat at a heavy mahogany desk, the glow of three high-resolution monitors casting a harsh, blue light across his face. Beside him, Miller stood with his arms crossed, watching the progress bar on the center screen crawl slowly toward completion.
Noah was curled up asleep on a leather sofa in the corner of the room, wrapped in one of Marcus’s spare wool coats, exhausted by the unimaginable trauma of the past seventy-two hours.
34%... 68%... 95%... 100%.
A sharp digital chime echoed through the silent room as the encrypted container file extracted successfully onto the local workstation.
"Well," Miller murmured, leaning closer to the screen as thousands of individual folders, PDF documents, audio recordings, and bank routing diagrams populated the file tree. "It looks like your wife didn't just back them into a corner, Ethan. She built a concrete bunker around them and threw away the key."
Ethan clicked open the primary folder labeled MASTER LEDGER - STERLING HOLDINGS.
On the screen, an intricate, multi-layered flowchart appeared, mapping out every single fraudulent transaction, every shell company registered in the Cayman Islands, Delaware, and Zurich, and—most importantly—dozens of recorded phone calls between Robert Sterling, David Morgan, and several state-level politicians who had accepted campaign donations funded directly by the looted pension assets of Whitmore & Sons Contracting.
"There's the connection to your father's company," Miller pointed, tracing a red line from an offshore holding account to a dummy corporation managed by David Morgan. "Your father didn't just declare bankruptcy because of market conditions, Ethan. He was blackmailed into liquidating his own business to cover Robert Sterling’s bad real estate loans."
Ethan stared at the screen, a heavy sadness settling in his chest. His father hadn't just been a willing participant in the corporate grift; he had been trapped in a financial vice grip engineered by the very people he had tried so desperately to impress.
"What about the audio files?" Ethan asked, clicking on a subfolder marked CALL RECORDINGS - 2025-2026.
"Play number forty-two," Miller suggested, pointing at a file dated just two weeks prior.
Ethan double-clicked the file. The audio waveform appeared on the screen, and a moment later, clear, unmistakable voices filled the quiet room.
“If Ethan finds out about the Whitmore asset transfer, the whole house of cards collapses,” David Morgan’s voice hissed through the computer speakers.
Then came a second voice—cooler, sharper, unmistakably feminine.
“Ethan is too busy building his digital marketing agency to notice a missing decimal point in a defunct construction ledger,” Claire Morgan replied coolly. “And if he ever asks questions, we’ll simply tell him his father was a negligent businessman who drove his own company into the ground. Nobody questions a grieving family.”
Ethan closed his eyes, leaning back in his leather chair as the audio continued to play in the background. The betrayal wasn't just financial; it was foundational, woven into every family dinner, every holiday greeting, and every polite handshake over the last ten years.
"So what's our next move?" Miller asked, reaching for his tactical radio. "Do we hand this over to the federal prosecutor leading the RICO investigation?"
"Not yet," Ethan said, opening a separate folder labeled COORDINATES & PROPERTY DEEDS. "Where is David’s flight right now?"
Miller checked his tablet. "Coast Guard interceptors just forced him down at a private airstrip in the outer banks of North Carolina. Local federal marshals took him into custody ten minutes ago. He's talking already—trying to pin the entire operation on Eleanor Sterling to save his own skin."
Ethan leaned forward, his eyes locked onto a specific property deed listed under Eleanor Sterling’s personal trust—a secluded estate located on the rugged coastline of Martha’s Vineyard, far away from the media circus in Providence.
"Eleanor thinks she’s untouchable," Ethan said quietly, standing up from the desk. "She thinks her name and her money can buy her way out of a murder conspiracy and a federal RICO indictment."
"Where are you going, Ethan?" Miller asked, watching him grab his jacket.
May you like
"To finish the audit," Ethan said, sliding the black titanium USB drive into his pocket. "Call a federal prosecutor and tell him we have a complete, unbroken chain of custody for two point four million dollars in laundered assets—and the physical location where Eleanor Sterling is currently attempting to liquidate her remaining offshore holdings."
Miller grinned, unhooking his radio from his belt. "Consider it done."
