Chapter 10 - The Collapse of the Empire-10

The warehouse exploded into utter bedlam.

“AMBUSH!” one of Croft’s enforcers screamed, reaching for his sidearm.

Before his hand could even touch his holster, a sharp, suppressed shot echoed from the upper catwalk. A high-velocity round struck the weapon directly out of his hand, shattering his gun into metal fragments and sending him screaming to the concrete floor.

Gabriel Vance stood on the high iron catwalk above, his tactical rifle steadily trained on Croft’s chest, his laser dot resting squarely between Croft’s eyes.

“DON'T MOVE, CROFT!” Gabriel’s booming voice thundered down from the rafters.

Dozens of fully armed FBI tactical officers burst through the heavy sliding doors and side entrances, shields raised, lasers illuminating every corner of the vast space.

“GET ON THE GROUND! HANDS ON YOUR HEAD!”

Croft’s three remaining enforcers immediately dropped their weapons, throwing their hands into the air and falling face-down onto the damp concrete.

Croft stood frozen, his eyes wide with shock, his gloved hand still touching the handle of my briefcase. He looked at the federal agents surrounding him, then up at Gabriel on the catwalk, and finally back at me.

“You...” Croft gasped, his voice trembling with a mixture of disbelief and fury. “You set me up.”

“I didn't set you up, Mr. Croft,” I replied calmly, taking two steps back into the safety of the advancing FBI tactical line. “You set yourself up the moment you threatened my father’s legacy.”

Special Agent Marcus Reed stepped forward, slamming heavy steel handcuffs onto Croft’s wrists and shoving him roughly against the side of a rusted container.

“Julian Croft,” Agent Reed declared loudly, reading from a card. “You are under arrest for federal racketeering, extortion, real estate fraud, and conspiracy. You have the right to remain silent...”

As Croft was hauled away in chains, his enforcers dragged along behind him, Daniel began to laugh hysterically from his chair—a broken, pathetic sound of pure relief.

“HA! Yes! Thank God!” Daniel cried out, weeping with joy. “Thank you, officers! Thank you! They were holding us hostage! They forced me to sign those papers! Evelyn, oh God, Evelyn, you did it! You saved us!”

Gloria nodded frantically, her face covered in tears as she looked at me with wide, desperate eyes. “Yes, Evelyn! We were victims! Daniel is innocent! Those terrible men kidnapped us! Tell the police, Evelyn! Tell them to untie us so we can go home!”

I walked slowly over to where Daniel and Gloria were tied to their chairs.

Special Agent Reed walked up beside me, pulling a thick blue folder from his tactical vest.

“Evelyn...” Daniel whimpered, stretching his bruised face toward me, his eyes filled with pathetic hope. “Please... untie me. Take me home. I swear I’ll make everything right. I’ll never raise my voice again. I’ll be the husband you always wanted!”

I looked down at him, my heart feeling completely light, clear, and unburdened.

“You’re not going home, Daniel,” I said softly.

Agent Reed stepped forward, signaling to two federal officers behind him. “Daniel Bradley and Gloria Bradley—you are both under arrest for conspiracy to commit grand larceny, real estate forgery, wire fraud, and domestic extortion.”

Daniel’s laughter died instantly. His face turned a sickening, terrifying shade of green. “What? No! No! I’m the victim here! My wife bought this house! I’m married to her!”

“You forged an affidavit, Daniel,” Agent Reed said coldly, pulling Daniel up from his chair and slapping handcuffs around his wrists. “We have your mother’s signature on the Cayman Island shell company accounts where the four hundred thousand dollars of stolen funds were deposited. We have text messages between you and Croft planning to force Mrs. Vance off the property.”

Gloria let out a blood-curdling scream as two female officers pulled her up from her chair. “No! Get your filthy hands off me! I am Gloria Bradley! My son is an important executive! Evelyn, tell them! Tell them to stop!”

I stood silently, watching as the mother and son who had tormented me for six years were shoved toward the back of separate federal transport vans.

Daniel turned his head back as the doors were about to close, looking at me through the wire mesh screen with wild, desperate, weeping eyes.

“EVELYN!” he screamed, his voice cracking against the cold steel of the van. “EVELYN, PLEASE! I LOVE YOU! DON'T DO THIS TO ME!”

I met his gaze one last time, my expression completely serene.

“Freshen up and smile, Daniel,” I said softly.

The heavy steel doors slammed shut, locking him into the dark forever.
