PART 2: THE VOICE ON THE PHONE

Every breath caught in my throat.

Had Daniel somehow uncovered the truth?

The room around me seemed to disappear.

All I could hear was the sound of my daughters laughing in the background and the steady rush of blood pounding in my ears.

Then the voice came again.

Calm.

Controlled.

Dangerously familiar.

"Rachel?"

The phone nearly slipped from my hand.

Eight years.

Eight entire years.

And somehow hearing his voice again shattered walls I had spent nearly a decade building.

I closed my eyes.

"Daniel."

Silence.

Not the awkward kind.

The painful kind.

The kind that carries years of unanswered questions.

Neither of us seemed to know what to say.

Finally Olivia cleared her throat.

"I'll give you two a moment."

A click followed.

Then we were alone.

For several seconds neither of us spoke.

Then Daniel exhaled slowly.

"I searched for you."

My fingers tightened around the phone.

"No."

"I did."

His voice sounded different than I remembered.

Older.

Tired.

As though success had cost him more than anyone realized.

"I searched for three years."

I laughed bitterly.

"Daniel Harden searched for me?"

"I hired investigators."

The words hit me harder than I expected.

Because Daniel never exaggerated.

Never lied.

If he said he searched, he had.

My legs suddenly felt weak.

I sat down at the kitchen table.

The same table where Emma had colored butterflies yesterday.

The same table where Sophie practiced spelling words every evening.

The same table where I had spent years convincing myself I made the right decision.

"Why?" I whispered.

The question escaped before I could stop it.

Another pause.

Then his answer came quietly.

"Because I loved you."

Tears immediately filled my eyes.

No.

No.

I couldn't allow this.

Not now.

Not after everything.

"You should have moved on."

"I tried."

The honesty in his voice hurt.

A lot.

"I never found anyone else."

My heart stopped.

I didn't know whether to believe him.

Part of me wanted to.

Part of me was terrified to.

Then Emma climbed onto my lap.

"Mom?"

I quickly wiped my eyes.

"What is it, sweetheart?"

She pointed at the phone.

"Is that the wedding man?"

Daniel heard her.

The silence on the line became absolute.

Wedding man.

Not Dad.

Not Father.

Just a stranger connected to a wedding.

Because that's all he was to them.

A stranger.

A stranger who happened to share their eyes.

Daniel finally spoke.

His voice barely audible.

"Who was that?"

I should have lied.

Maybe I intended to.

But I was tired.

So unbelievably tired.

"Twin number one."

The line went silent again.

Longer this time.

Much longer.

Then:

"Rachel..."

I ended the call.

Immediately.

Before he could say anything else.

Before I could lose my courage.

Before the past swallowed me whole.

That night I barely slept.

The girls fell asleep quickly.

Emma sprawled across her bed like a starfish.

Sophie curled beneath her blanket holding a stuffed rabbit.

I stood in the doorway watching them.

Watching the daughters Daniel had never met.

The daughters who inherited his smile.

His eyes.

His stubbornness.

His intelligence.

For years I convinced myself I protected them.

Protected him.

Protected everyone.

But now doubt had arrived.

And doubt is dangerous.

At 2:17 a.m., my phone buzzed.

One text.

Unknown number.

I already knew who it was.

Daniel.

The message contained only one sentence.

Are they mine?

I stared at the screen for nearly ten minutes.

Then another message arrived.

Please don't lie.

Tears blurred my vision.

Because Daniel knew me.

Always had.

Eventually I typed three words.

Yes. They are.

The reply came almost instantly.

Can I see them?

I couldn't answer.

Not because I didn't know.

Because I did know.

The answer terrified me.

The next morning chaos erupted.

Not in my apartment.

At Harden Technologies.

Though I wouldn't learn that until later.

Daniel hadn't slept either.

The moment he received my message, his entire world changed.

Board meetings became background noise.

Stock reports became meaningless.

Acquisitions.

Investments.

International negotiations.

None of it mattered.

For eight years he believed he had lost me.

Now he had discovered something even more unbelievable.

He had daughters.

Twin daughters.

Eight years old.

Living less than twenty miles away.

His assistant later claimed she had never seen him so distracted.

During a meeting with investors, he accidentally called a billion-dollar project by the name "Sophie."

Nobody understood why.

Only Daniel knew.

For the first time in years, money couldn't solve his problem.

Because this wasn't business.

This was family.

And family can't be negotiated.

Three days later someone knocked on my apartment door.

My stomach immediately tightened.

Nobody visited unexpectedly.

Nobody.

I looked through the peephole.

Then froze.

Daniel.

Standing alone.

No security.

No assistants.

No bodyguards.

No expensive suit.

Just jeans.

A dark jacket.

And eyes that looked exhausted.

For a moment neither of us moved.

Then I opened the door.

The years disappeared instantly.

Not because we looked the same.

We didn't.

Life had changed both of us.

But some connections survive time.

Some survive distance.

Some survive heartbreak.

Daniel stared at me.

As if trying to confirm I was real.

"Hi."

One word.

Eight years of history.

I nodded.

"Hi."

Then footsteps echoed from the hallway.

Little footsteps.

Fast footsteps.

Dangerous footsteps.

Because they belonged to curious children.

Emma appeared first.

Then Sophie.

The moment Daniel saw them, something happened.

Something impossible to fake.

His entire face changed.

The billionaire vanished.

The businessman vanished.

The public figure vanished.

Only a father remained.

Because standing in front of him were two little girls with his eyes.

His smile.

His face.

The resemblance was overwhelming.

Sophie tilted her head.

"Mom?"

My heart hammered.

Daniel couldn't look away from them.

Neither could I.

Then Emma asked the question that changed everything.

"Who is he?"

The world seemed to stop turning.

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

Mine did too.

Because after eight years of secrets...

After eight years of hiding...

After eight years of silence...

The truth had finally arrived at my front door.

And none of us were ready for what would happen next.

Because neither Daniel nor I knew that someone else had been watching.

Someone who desperately needed this reunion to fail.

Someone connected to the wedding.

Someone connected to the bride.

Someone who had spent months hiding a secret far more dangerous than ours.

May you like

And before the week was over, that secret would threaten everything.

Including the lives of the twin girls Daniel had only just discovered.
