Chapter 3 - The Paternity Paradox

-1043-

The manila envelope rested on the dark wood console table like an unexploded ordnance. For three seconds, nobody moved. The only sound in the apartment was the rhythmic, heavy ticking of the decorative wall clock in the living room.

Julian’s eyes darted from the envelope back to my face, his chest rising and falling in rapid, shallow gasps. The bravado he had worn like cheap armor moments before had completely disintegrated, leaving behind the jittery, sweat-slicked panic of a cornered animal.

“What… what is that?” Julian stammered, taking a slow, cautious step toward the table as if afraid the paper might detonate. “Clara, what are you playing at? There are no other documents. You’re bluffing.”

“Am I?” I asked calmly, stepping back toward the door and resting my hand on the polished brass doorknob. “You always were arrogant, Julian. You assumed that because I trusted you, I was blind. You assumed that when you spent those late nights ‘restructuring corporate assets,’ you were the only one conducting an audit.”

Chloe pushed herself up from the sofa, clutching her protruding belly with one hand while pointing a trembling finger at me with the other. Her face had gone from triumphant smugness to a sickly, ash-gray pallor. “She’s lying! Julian, don't listen to her! She’s just trying to break us apart out of jealousy because she’s empty!”

“Quiet, Chloe,” Evelyn hissed, though her own voice lacked its previous venom. She reached out with a manicured, trembling hand and picked up the manila envelope. Her fingers fumbled awkwardly with the metal clasp, sliding the heavy cardstock flap open.

She pulled out a multi-page packet bearing the official embossed letterhead of the Manhattan Genomic Diagnostics & Reproductive Institute.

As Evelyn’s eyes scanned the first page, the haughty, rigid posture she had maintained all evening suddenly wilted. Her mouth parted slightly, a dry, rattling breath escaping her lips. The color drained from her cheeks so fast she looked like a marble statue carved from ash.

“No…” Evelyn whispered, the word barely audible. “No, this… this is impossible. This must be a forgery! You fabricated this!”

“Check the cryptographic digital signatures on the bottom right of page four, Evelyn,” I replied smoothly. “Generated directly from the clinic’s secure database, timestamped and verified under state medical compliance protocols. You can call Dr. Harrison right now if you’d like. He’s currently reviewing the case file with the federal prosecutor.”

Julian couldn't take it anymore. He lunged past his mother, snatched the papers out of her nerveless fingers, and began reading.

His eyes raced across the text, darting back and forth across the genetic marker charts and comparative DNA sequencing tables. I watched the exact second comprehension struck him. His knees buckled, and he slammed backward against the wall, his shoulder hitting the plaster with a dull thud.

“Ethan…” Julian breathed out, his voice a broken, hysterical squeak. “Ethan Vance?!”

“Bingo,” I said with a cold, metallic smile.

The documents in that envelope didn't just outline Chloe’s prenatal records; they contained the full genetic paternity sequencing comparing the fetus to Julian—and matching it definitively to Ethan Vance, Julian’s billionaire senior business partner, real estate mogul, and primary financial backer of their entire fraudulent enterprise.

Julian had spent the last nine months playing the devoted, cuckolding provider, risking federal prison, liquidating my inheritance, and destroying our marriage to secure an heir—only to discover he was nothing more than a convenient financial patsy raising another man’s child with his boss.

“You son of a bitch!” Chloe suddenly shrieked, spinning around to face Julian with raw, unbridled fury. She lunged forward, her fingernails clawing wildly at his face before he could raise his hands to defend himself. “You knew! You knew Ethan and I had history before we started this! You told me you didn't care as long as we had a child to trap her with!”

“I didn't know it was his!” Julian screamed back, shoving Chloe hard enough that she stumbled backward into the sofa, crying out in pain as she clutched her stomach. “You told me it was mine! You swore to me it was mine!”

Evelyn stood frozen between them, her hands trembling so violently she dropped the remaining medical papers onto the floor, where they scattered across the hardwood like autumn leaves. The grand dynasty she had plotted to build on my ruin had imploded into a pathetic, violent domestic brawl in less than five minutes.

“The federal marshals are downstairs in the lobby,” I said, my voice cutting through their screaming match like a silver blade. I pulled the heavy oak door open wide, letting the cool hallway air rush into the stifling apartment. “And Ethan Vance is currently being picked up by IRS criminal investigators at his Park Avenue penthouse for offshore tax evasion linked to your exact corporate shell accounts, Julian.”

May you like

I stepped out into the hallway, pausing on the threshold to look back at the three miserable wrecks who had tried to destroy my life.

“Enjoy your evening,” I said softly. “Make sure you pack light. Federal orange isn't very forgiving on the complexion.”
