Chapter 10 - The Collapse of the Cartel10 -

The name Sterling hit the room like a physical shockwave.

Julian Vanguard’s face drained of color, his cold gray eyes widening in sudden, involuntary terror. The other four board members scrambled backward, knocking their leather chairs against the marble floor as if a ghost had materialized before them.

“Impossible,” Julian stammered, gripping the edge of the glass table so hard his knuckles turned white. “The alpine rescue report confirmed two bodies! The insurance payout was processed! You... you died in that blizzard!”

“Did you really think a little snow and ice could stop a Sterling?” I asked, walking slowly toward the head of the conference table, my heels clicking rhythmically against the floor.

Julian’s recovery was fast. He sneered, regaining his arrogant composure, and gestured casually toward the door behind us.

“Guards!” he shouted. “Remove these intruders immediately!”

The heavy double doors of the penthouse burst open, and four heavily armed tactical operatives rushed into the room, raising tactical submachine guns directly toward Viktor and me.

I didn't blink. I didn't raise my hands. I simply reached into my emerald clutch bag and pulled out a sleek, glowing black satellite transmitter.

“Before you give the order to fire, Julian,” I said calmly, pressing my thumb against the biometric fingerprint scanner on the device, “take a look at your master financial console on the wall.”

Julian frowned, glancing suspiciously toward the massive wall-mounted holographic display screen at the end of the room.

With a soft electronic chime, the screen flickered to life. Instead of stock market indices, it displayed a real-time global asset freeze map. Bright red warning banners flashed across the interface:

CRITICAL ALERT: PRIMARY OFFSHORE RESERVES IN ZURICH, CAYMANS, AND PANAMA COMPROMISED. ASSET TRANSFER INITIATED. BENEFICIARY: STERLING GLOBAL HOLDINGS.

Julian’s jaw dropped. He stared at the screen in absolute, paralyzing horror as billions of dollars of illicit syndicate funds were systematically drained, rerouted, and locked behind military-grade encryption walls controlled entirely by my grandfather’s network.

“You... what have you done?” Julian breathed, taking a shaky step forward. “You’ve destroyed decades of work! You’ve ruined us!”

“I didn't ruin you, Julian,” I replied softly, stopping just inches away from him, looking up into his panicked gray eyes with absolute, chilling detachment. “I simply repossessed what was stolen from my family twenty years ago.”

Before Julian could lunge forward, the tactical operatives guarding the door suddenly froze. Their earpieces crackled with static, followed by a calm, authoritative voice speaking in crisp English:

“Vanguard security detail, stand down. This is Interpol and Swiss Federal Police. The penthouse is entirely surrounded. Drop your weapons or face immediate termination.”

The four armed guards looked at each other, glanced at Julian, and slowly lowered their weapons to the floor, raising their hands behind their heads.

Viktor Vance stepped forward, pulling a pair of heavy steel zip-ties from his coat and securing them around Julian Vanguard’s wrists with a satisfying, mechanical snap.

“It’s over, old man,” Viktor muttered darkly. “Your empire just went bankrupt.”
