PART 20: THE WATCHER IN THE LOBBY

For a moment, neither Marcus nor I spoke.
Lily sat cross-legged on the living room rug, completely unaware that she had just dropped a bombshell into the middle of an already impossible situation.
The crayon drawing remained in her small hands.
A stick figure.
A doorway.
A smiling face.
Simple.
Childlike.
Terrifying.
"The man downstairs?" I asked carefully.
Lily nodded.
Still coloring.
Still calm.
"The one who waves."
My stomach tightened.
Marcus set down the photograph he had been studying.
Slowly.
Too slowly.
As if moving too quickly might make the answer worse.
"When did you see him?"
Lily shrugged.
"Lots."
The room instantly felt colder.
Lots.
Not once.
Not twice.
Lots.
Marcus exchanged a look with me.
The same thought flashed through both our minds.
How many times had this happened?
How many opportunities had someone had to approach her?
How close had they gotten?
I moved beside Lily.
Keeping my voice gentle.
Neutral.
The way therapists recommend when speaking to children.
"What does he look like, sweetheart?"
She thought for a moment.
Then smiled.
"He has a funny hat."
Marcus froze.
I noticed immediately.
Because Adrian had worn a baseball cap in every photograph we'd recovered.
But Lily shook her head before either of us could ask more.
"Not that kind."
She pointed toward the window.
"Like old grandpas wear."
A flat cap.
Not Adrian.
Someone else.
Again.
Always someone else.
The deeper we dug, the more people appeared.
Like hidden doors opening into more hidden doors.
The next morning Detective Tran arrived before sunrise.
For once, he didn't look tired.
He looked angry.
Genuinely angry.
The kind of anger that comes from realizing you've missed something important.
"Security footage."
He placed a flash drive on the table.
"We pulled every camera angle around the building."
My pulse immediately accelerated.
"And?"
Tran opened his laptop.
A video appeared.
The apartment lobby.
Date and time stamped.
People entering.
People leaving.
Completely ordinary.
Then the footage paused.
A man entered the frame.
Older.
Gray hair.
Dark coat.
Flat cap.
My stomach dropped.
Lily had described him perfectly.
The man stood near the mailboxes.
Waiting.
Not checking mail.
Not visiting anyone.
Waiting.
Tran fast-forwarded.
The man remained there.
Ten minutes.
Twenty minutes.
Thirty-seven minutes.
Watching.
Always watching.
Then something happened that made my blood run cold.
Lily entered the lobby with Marcus.
Returning from preschool three days earlier.
The man immediately turned away.
Not casually.
Quickly.
Deliberately.
Like someone avoiding recognition.
The footage continued.
Marcus and Lily entered the elevator.
The doors closed.
And only then did the man turn back.
His eyes fixed on the elevator.
Following it upward.
Watching.
Again.
Always watching.
"Do we know who he is?" I asked.
Tran nodded.
The answer surprised me.
Because usually we never got answers this quickly.
"We identified him last night."
Silence.
Then:
"His name is Bao Le."
The detective opened another file.
A photograph appeared.
The same man.
Twenty years younger.

Standing beside several other men.
One face instantly stood out.
Adrian.
The room seemed to shrink.
Bao and Adrian knew each other.
Of course they did.
Everything connected to Adrian eventually.
Everything.
Marcus leaned forward.
"Who is Bao?"
Tran hesitated.
A rare thing for him.
Then he answered.
"Former police officer."
The room fell silent.
Former police officer.
The words carried weight.
Experience.
Training.
Access.
Knowledge.
Someone who knew investigations.
Someone who knew how to avoid attention.
Someone who knew how to disappear.
Then Tran delivered the next shock.
"He was at Daniel's accident scene."
Marcus looked up instantly.
"What?"
The detective nodded.
"He was one of the first responding officers."
I felt my pulse accelerate.
No.
Not coincidence.
Not anymore.
There were too many connections.
Far too many.
Daniel.
Adrian.
Lan.
The envelope.
The watcher.
Now Bao.
All orbiting the same mystery.
The same death.
The same cover-up.
The same lie.
That afternoon we received another envelope.
This time there was no question who delivered it.
The building manager personally brought it upstairs.
"No return address."
My stomach tightened immediately.
The envelope was thick.
Heavy.
Almost identical to the first.
Marcus opened it carefully.
Inside was a key.
Nothing else.
Just a key.
Old brass.
Worn edges.
And attached to it...
a faded tag.
Locker 214.
No location.
No explanation.
No note.
But both of us immediately thought the same thing.
Daniel.
The key from Lan's letter.
The key Daniel gave her before he died.
Somehow it had found its way to us.
Detective Tran moved quickly.
Within hours, the key was traced.
A train station on the edge of the city.
Old storage lockers.
Most abandoned years ago.
The facility itself barely remained operational.
By sunset, we were there.
Marcus.
Tran.
And me.
The building felt forgotten.
Dusty.
Quiet.
Rows of lockers stretching down dim hallways.
Locker 214 sat near the back.
Waiting.
The brass key slid in smoothly.
As if nobody had touched it in years.
Marcus looked at me.
Then at Tran.
Then turned the lock.
The click echoed louder than it should have.
The door opened.
Inside sat a single metal box.
Nothing else.
No documents.
No cash.
No photographs.
Just a box.
Old.
Heavy.
Locked.
Back at police headquarters, they opened it carefully.
The contents changed everything.
Inside were documents.
Hundreds of pages.
Financial records.
Photographs.
Bank transfers.
Letters.
Names.
So many names.
Politicians.
Business owners.
Foundation directors.
People connected to charities Daniel had investigated.
People connected to the network.
Evidence.
Real evidence.
The kind that destroys careers.
The kind that sends people to prison.
The kind people kill for.
Then Detective Tran found the photograph.
One photograph.
Different from the others.
Hidden beneath the paperwork.
His expression immediately changed.
"What?"
He didn't answer.
Instead he handed it to Marcus.
Marcus looked.
And nearly dropped it.
Because standing in the center of the image...
was Detective Tran.
The room went silent.
Not breathing.
Not movement.
Nothing.
Only silence.
The photograph had been taken twelve years earlier.
A fundraising event.
Dozens of people attended.
Among them:
Adrian.
Bao.
Several names from Daniel's investigation.
And Detective Tran.
My pulse pounded.
The warning echoed inside my head.
Don't trust the person helping you.
Adrian's words.
Suddenly impossible to ignore.
Marcus slowly looked up.
Tran stared at the photograph too.
His expression unreadable.
Then he sighed.
A long.
Heavy.
Exhausted sigh.
And said the last thing I expected.
"I've been hoping you wouldn't find that."
The room seemed to tilt.
My heart hammered.
Marcus stood.
"What does that mean?"
Tran closed his eyes briefly.
Like a man accepting an inevitable moment.
Then he opened them again.
And quietly said:
"It means Adrian was right."
The silence that followed felt endless.
Terrifying.
Final.
Because the detective we'd trusted.
The detective who helped rescue Lily.
The detective who uncovered evidence.
The detective who stood beside us every step of the way...
Had just admitted he was part of the story.
And whatever happened next would finally reveal the truth behind Daniel's death.
The truth behind Lan's disappearance.
The truth behind Adrian's betrayal.
May you like
And the reason someone had been watching Lily from the very beginning.
