Chapter 5 - THE BROTHER NOBODY WATCHED

5
Adrian spent most of his life protecting Marcus.
That was the irony.
Marcus Vale was four years younger.
Quieter.
Less ambitious.
Less athletic.
Less visible.
At family dinners, Adrian dominated conversations while Marcus made jokes.
When Theodore disappeared, Adrian became angry.
Marcus became charming.
Celeste worried about Adrian constantly.
Nobody worried about Marcus.
Perhaps that was how he wanted it.
On the monitor beneath Bellwether House, Marcus looked almost relaxed.
Vanessa sat beside him.
Not restrained.
Celeste was tied to the chair.
That changed everything.
“Let her go,” Adrian said.
Marcus smiled.
“You still do that.”
“Do what?”
“Assume you’re responsible for everybody.”
“Marcus.”
“You used to stand between Dad and me whenever he yelled.”
Adrian stared.
“Theodore never hurt you.”
“No. He disappointed me.”
Marcus leaned closer.
“Worse.”
I moved toward the server console.
A warning appeared.
UNAUTHORIZED INTERRUPTION WILL RELEASE ARCHIVE.
Marcus noticed.
“Careful, Eleanor.”
“What archive?”
“Your father called it Vault Seven. I call mine insurance.”
Daniel examined the door.
Magnetic lock.
Emergency override disabled.
Marcus controlled the cellar.
“Why humiliate me at the banquet?” I asked.
He smiled.
“Finally, the right question.”
Vanessa looked uncomfortable.
Marcus answered.
“Mother wanted Black Harbor opened. Adrian wanted Black Harbor exposed. I wanted both.”
“You arranged the affair.”
“I arranged Vanessa.”
She looked toward him.
“I wasn’t arranged.”
“No?”
Marcus’s tone made her flinch.
He had promised Vanessa proof her father was innocent.
In exchange, she infiltrated Adrian’s office.
Celeste believed Vanessa worked for her.
Adrian believed he had turned Vanessa into a double agent.
Vanessa believed she was manipulating both.
But Marcus had recruited her first.
Layers within layers.
“What do you want?” Adrian asked.
“Ownership.”
“You already control the custodian authorization.”
“Custodian without beneficiary is a jailer without a key.”
He looked at me.
“Eleanor is the key.”
“You forged her authorization for seven years.”
“For maintenance transactions. Legacy rules allow limited movement. Tonight’s settlement cycle is different.”
The full reserve could only be transferred with my live biometric consent.
“How much?”
Marcus smiled.
“Eight point four billion.”
Daniel whispered a curse.
Black Harbor was larger than any estimate.
“Where did it come from?”
Marcus’s expression changed.
“Everywhere.”
He explained with disturbing pride.
The network began under Victor and Celeste.
Corporate kickbacks.
Hidden commissions.
Tax schemes.
Then Theodore discovered it.
But Marcus expanded it.
He was twenty-three when he first accessed the hidden ledgers.
He realized his mother and uncle were amateurs.
They hid money.
Marcus learned to weaponize it.
He funded hostile takeovers.
Bought distressed debt.
Backed political donors anonymously.
Manipulated competitors through shell lenders.
Vale Meridian’s legitimate business became camouflage around a private financial machine.
“Adrian became CEO,” Marcus said. “Everybody watched him.”
He spread his hands.
“I became the brother who liked parties.”
Perfect invisibility.
“What did my father discover?”
“Too much.”
“Did you kill him?”
Marcus’s smile disappeared.
“Mother administered the compound.”
“Under your instruction?”
Celeste suddenly spoke.
“No.”
Marcus turned toward her.
She looked straight into the camera.
“I did it because he threatened Adrian.”
Adrian stared.
“What?”
Celeste’s voice shook.
“Charles said he was going to expose everything.”
“He should have.”
“He told me you would go to prison.”
“For what?”
“Your meetings with Theodore. The offshore investigation. You moved funds to track them.”
Adrian had unknowingly violated laws while trying to trace the network.
My father intended to protect him through cooperation.
Celeste misunderstood.
Or claimed to.
“You poisoned Charles because you thought he was threatening me?”
“He said the Vale family would end.”
“You murdered Eleanor’s father.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.”
I felt no sympathy.
None.
But Marcus laughed.
“Mother always tells the sentimental version.”
“Shut up,” Celeste said.
He turned toward me.
“Charles was not supposed to die that night.”
“What?”
“The drug was intended to incapacitate him.”
Celeste stared at Marcus.
“No.”
Marcus smiled at her.
“Yes.”
He altered the dosage.
Celeste believed she would frighten my father.
Marcus made certain the compound became fatal.
Then he used the death to force Celeste deeper into Black Harbor.
“She thought she killed him,” Marcus said. “Guilt is such a reliable leash.”
Celeste looked physically sick.
“You changed the vial.”
“Yes.”
“You told me—”
“I tell you many things.”
Adrian struck the cellar door with both hands.
“You murdered Charles.”
Marcus shrugged.
“Indirectly.”
I wanted to scream.
Instead, I asked the question my father would have asked.
“Why?”
“Because Charles found me.”
Not Celeste.
Not Adrian.
Marcus.
My father traced unauthorized Black Harbor transactions back to an internal credential.
M.V.
He thought it meant Meridian Vault.
Then he realized it meant Marcus Vale.
He planned to confront him after dealing with Celeste.
Marcus arrived after Celeste left.
My father was already weak.
Marcus watched the drug take effect.
Then he removed one thing from Charles’s desk.
A list of offshore accounts.
He assumed that was everything.
He did not know about Vault Seven.
Until tonight.
“So Adrian’s humiliation was bait.”
“For you.”
“You knew I’d fire him.”
“Of course.”
“Why?”
Marcus laughed.
“Because you have one predictable weakness.”
“What?”
“Dignity.”
He understood I would tolerate private pain longer than public humiliation.
That knowledge chilled me more than his money.
“What happens now?”
“You authorize the reserve transfer.”
“To where?”
“Thirty-four decentralized trusts.”
“No.”
“Then we stay here.”
“Authorities are already coming.”
“They’ll find Bellwether empty.”
“You’re literally on a live screen.”
“From another country?”
Daniel looked toward the video compression indicators.
Marcus might be bluffing.
Or not.
I glanced at Celeste.
Her eyes moved toward something off-camera.
Repeatedly.
Left.
Down.
Left.
She was signaling.
Adrian noticed too.
Marcus kept talking.
“Eleanor, I don’t need all eight billion.”
“How generous.”
“I need you to authorize six transfers.”
“Why?”
“Because six accounts contain records that connect Black Harbor to people who will kill to prevent disclosure.”
“What people?”
“Senators?”
Marcus smiled.
“Think less dramatic.”
He leaned forward.
“Pension trustees. University boards. hospital systems. family foundations. People nobody writes thrillers about.”
That was almost worse.
The network was built through respectable institutions.
Money stolen in small percentages from millions of ordinary lives.
My father called it Black Harbor because dirty money entered and came out looking protected.
Then the cellar console flashed.
REMOTE CUSTODIAN OVERRIDE REQUEST.
Marcus.
He needed my approval.
I declined.
Vanessa stood.
“Marcus, this wasn’t the deal.”
He looked at her.
“What deal?”
“You said nobody would get hurt.”
Celeste laughed bitterly.
“Welcome to the family.”
Vanessa backed away.
Marcus’s expression hardened.
“Sit.”
“No.”
“Vanessa.”
She looked directly at the camera.
“Eleanor, the signal is coming from the boathouse.”
Celeste moved.
Marcus turned.
The screen jolted.
A struggle.
Then vanished.
Adrian stared.
“Which boathouse?”
Bellwether property had a lake.
Half a mile east.
Daniel attacked the emergency panel.
I looked at the server.
There had to be another way.
My biometric authorization controlled Black Harbor.
If Marcus needed me, he could not risk killing me.
I placed my thumb on the reader.
The console woke.
ADDITIONAL ACTIONS AVAILABLE.
Not only transfers.
ARCHIVE RELEASE.
I selected it.
Daniel spun.
“What are you doing?”
“If Marcus built insurance, so did my father.”
The system asked:
Release Black Harbor archive to designated external authorities?
YES.
NO.
A third option:
DELAYED RELEASE — 30 MINUTES.
I smiled.
Thirty minutes.
Exactly what Marcus believed he had used against me at the banquet.
I chose delayed release.
The system required custodian cancellation to stop it.
Marcus would have to come physically to the master node.
The countdown began.
29:59.
29:58.
I looked at the camera.
“Marcus wanted me to open Black Harbor.”
Adrian understood.
“So make him come close enough to close it.”
May you like
At 28:41, the cellar door unlocked.
Marcus had taken the bait.
