Chapter 11 - THE VIPER'S NEST

-11-

The fragile, intoxicating peace of the penthouse lasted exactly two weeks.

In the criminal underworld of Chicago, peace was never a permanent state; it was merely a localized ceasefire between one execution and the next.

It was 2:00 AM when the secure, encrypted satellite phone on Carmine’s nightstand let out a sharp, piercing chime that cut through the silence of the master bedroom like a razor blade.

Carmine’s eyes snapped open instantly. He didn't flinch, and he didn't fumble. With the reflexes of a predator jolted from sleep, his hand shot out across the sheets, snatching the burner phone off the mahogany stand before the second ring could finish.

"Valcrow," Carmine barked into the receiver, his voice cold, flat, and entirely devoid of sleep.

Beside him in the massive king-sized bed, Ivy stirred, blinking sleepily against the dim moonlight filtering through the glass-walled penthouse. She shifted her weight, pulling the silk duvet higher around her shoulders, watching as the harsh, dangerous lines of Carmine’s face hardened into stone under the pale light of the phone screen.

"Boss, we have a breach at the North Pier docks," Vincent Marsh’s voice crackled through the secure speaker, tight with frantic, suppressed adrenaline. "It’s not the police, and it’s not a rival street gang. It’s federal. A deep-cover DOJ task force led by a U.S. Marshal named Vance."

Carmine’s jaw clenched so tightly a muscle ticked along his cheek. "Federal? The Department of Justice hasn't had a functioning task force inside my district in six years. Who authorized it?"

"We don't know yet," Vincent reported rapidly. "They came in through an unrecorded jurisdiction out of Washington. They didn't raid the warehouse for drugs or cash—they hit the secondary server room. The one where we archived the financial ledgers linking our front companies to the state appellate judges."

A cold, dead silence settled over the bedroom.

The judges. The very foundation upon which the Falcone empire’s political immunity had been built for decades. If the Department of Justice had secured those encrypted files, every single corrupt politician, police captain, and magistrate on Carmine’s payroll was about to be exposed in a nationwide federal indictment.

"Lock down the penthouse," Carmine commanded, his voice dropping into a lethal, razor-sharp register. "Activate the secondary offshore server burn protocol. I want every byte of data on those judges incinerated within five minutes."

"Already initiated, boss," Vincent replied. "But there's something else. The federal task force... they didn't just stumble onto the North Pier server room by accident. Someone gave them the exact GPS coordinates, the security override codes, and the master decryption keys."

Carmine’s dark obsidian eyes slowly drifted away from the phone screen.

They moved across the dark bedroom, stopping softly on the pillow beside him.

They locked onto Ivy.

Ivy’s breath caught in her throat. The blood drained entirely from her face, leaving her feeling as though she had been plunged into an ice-cold bath. She pulled the silk duvet tighter around her chest, staring up at Carmine with wide, terrified eyes.

"Carmine..." she whispered, her voice shaking violently. "You... you don't think..."

May you like

"Stay on the line, Vincent," Carmine said softly, never breaking eye contact with Ivy. He ended the call, sliding the burner phone onto the nightstand with a slow, deliberate motion.

The air in the master bedroom instantly turned into a block of solid ice.
