Chapter 10 - THE MONEY TAKEN FROM LEO

-10
Restoring Leo’s education account was not as simple as writing a check.
The original balance before unauthorized withdrawals had been $97,600.
The account would have grown.
There were tax penalties.
Fees.
Missed gains.
Forensic accountant calculated reasonable restoration:
$113,842.
Luca’s assets provided $82,000 quickly.
Rosa returned $31,000 directly attributable, but some of that had other claims.
The engagement ring refund.
Consulting business sale.
Pension offset.
Eventually:
$113,842 deposited.
I stared at statement.
Balance restored.
Then I did something I should have done from beginning.
I gave Leo age-appropriate truth about account.
Not exact initially.
“Grandma—my mom—put money away for your education.”
He knew Grandma died when small.
“Dad took some without permission.”
“I know.”
“The court made it come back.”
“All?”
“Yes.”
He thought.
“Is it mine?”
“For education under rules. Technically account controlled by parent, but intended for you.”
“Can you take it?”
“Only under rules, and I will talk to you when older.”
“Could you steal it?”
The question hurt.
“I could make bad choices if I had access.”
He looked alarmed.
“That’s why we use statements and advisers.”
Systems.
No parent should teach child “trust me blindly” after this.
I added independent financial adviser and view-only reporting to Leo when teen later.
But at seven:
“We check.”
He nodded.
Then:
“Why did Dad take?”
“To solve his problems.”
“Why not ask?”
Exactly.
“He knew answer might be no.”
Leo understood.
Then:
“So he stole yes.”
Wow.
I wrote that down mentally.
Stealing yes.
Consent.
Then his therapist said children often blame money as cause.
We clarified:
Money didn’t cause father’s choices.
His choices about money.
Important.
Then my own financial education.
I had left finances to Luca because he “liked numbers.”
I signed tax returns without full review.
Joint accounts.
Pension.
Insurance.
I learned.
Not because I was foolish.
Because specialization in marriage normal.
But now:
Separate personal account.
Household account.
Monthly statements.
Credit freeze.
Identity monitoring.
Leo documents secure.
Will.
Beneficiary designations.
I became slightly obsessive.
Rebecca said:
“Don’t let fraud turn you into full-time auditor of people who love you.”
Fair.
Trust can return with verification.
Then Rosa.
Her restitution payments depleted savings.
She moved to smaller apartment.
Some relatives blamed me.
“She’s elderly.”
Sixty-three.
Not helpless.
I did not demand beyond legal.
She returned.
She requested Leo contact again.
He said maybe birthday card.
We allowed.
Rosa wrote:
Dear Leo,
I helped your father hide things. I told myself I was protecting you from conflict. I was wrong. I helped create more conflict.
Good.
Then:
I signed papers I knew your mother had not signed.
Specific.
“I’m sorry.”
Leo read.
Then:
“Can I see her?”
Therapist.
Eventually coffee.
Rosa did not ask forgiveness.
She apologized to me too, in front? No, separate.
“I was jealous of your place in Luca’s life.”
That surprised.
What?
Rosa had been widowed and Luca became emotional support.
When he married me, she felt replaced.
She never admitted.
When Celeste appeared, why support?
Because Luca returned to confiding in Rosa, making her central.
Secret gave Rosa importance.
She became keeper.
That psychological benefit joined money.
She said:
“Being needed felt like being loved.”
There.
Pattern.
I told:
“Luca got that somewhere.”
She cried.
Yes.
Then I asked:
“Why did you treat Celeste better?”
“She asked my advice.”
I didn't? I was independent.
Rosa preferred dependent.
Then:
“I’m sorry.”
I accepted apology as words.
Trust limited.
She could see Leo supervised/family gradually.
No finances.
Then my work.
I increased hours.
Eventually became director at library? Could. Not necessary.
I returned to graduate school? Maybe later.
I had always wanted to open literacy nonprofit? No.
Keep focus family.
Then social media.
The story remained viral.
Years later searches showed.
I worried Leo.
We worked digital literacy.
He knew.
No hiding.
At ten maybe he would encounter.
We explained before internet did.
Then Mia.
She and Leo bonded.
At one visit she asked:
“Did Daddy use your money for my school?”
Leo looked at me.
Celeste had told age-appropriate.
I answered:
“He used money from Leo’s education account for things he should have paid another way.”
Mia started crying.
“I don’t want school.”
Oh.
We stopped.
“This is not your debt.”
Leo surprised me.
“It’s okay.”
He looked at sister.
“I got money back.”
“Did you?”
“Yes.”
“Are you mad at me?”
“No.”
Then:
“You didn’t know.”
He understood at nine better than adults.
Mia hugged.
Then later Leo told:
“I was kind of mad at first.”
“That's okay.”
“But she’s little.”
Yes.
He processed.
Then Luca prison letters.
He sent equal to both children.
No comparing.
He wrote about aviation sometimes.
Leo began asking.
“How does a plane land in crosswind?”
Luca answered diagrams.
Piloting knowledge separated from betrayal.
That was important.
A person’s skill can remain meaningful though moral failures.
Leo rebuilt interest.
At nine, he asked to take discovery flight someday.
I froze.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
“With Dad?”
He couldn’t.
“Not now.”
A local flight school unrelated.
We went.
Instructor female veteran pilot, Captain Janelle Brooks.
Leo sat front.
I watched ground.
When plane landed, his face lit like before.
I cried.
He had reclaimed sky.
Then he said:
“Dad doesn’t own planes.”
Correct.
Aviation was not Luca.
Then when Luca released? Later chapters.
Before, one financial final detail.
The engagement ring was bought partly from 529, yes.
Refund only fraction.
Leo knew later.
At twelve he joked:
“I technically proposed to Aunt Celeste.”
We screamed.
Not aunt technically, but Mia’s mother.
Humor.
Celeste laughed.
Trauma became story not wound only.
Then bank fraud restitution final.
The house sale etc.
I received money.
I did not feel rich.
I felt documented.
My name cleared.
Court order:
Elena Romano did not execute contested refinance, HELOC, POA, divorce settlement, pension waiver.
That sentence.
I framed? No.
Stored.
But it mattered.
Paper had hurt.
Paper corrected.
Then I changed surname.
After divorce, I considered maiden name Carter.
Elena Carter.
Leo Romano.
Would different names complicate?
No.
I chose Carter again.
Not reject son.
My name before.
I asked Leo:
“Would it bother?”
“No.”
“Are you changing?”
“No.”
Good.
Choices.
So I became Elena Carter.
Luca remained Romano.
Leo Romano.
Mia Harper.
May you like
Family did not need matching names.
That lesson.
