Chapter 12 - The Shadows of the Past

12

While Alex stood in his Manhattan tower contemplating the ghosts of his past, three hundred miles away in a high-security federal penitentiary in upstate New York, Julian Pearce stared blankly at the gray concrete wall of cell block 4B.

The fluorescent light overhead buzzed with a low, maddening hum. The air smelled of industrial disinfectant, damp wool, and unwashed despair.

Julian pulled his thin orange jumpsuit tighter around his shivering frame. His cellmate, a hulking narcotics dealer doing a twenty-year stint, was fast asleep on the top bunk, snoring rhythmically.

Julian’s mind raced in circles, replaying every single decision that had brought him to this exact square of concrete. He had everything—millions of dollars in stock options, a life of luxury, a brilliant career as a tech executive, and the respect of the entire East Coast business elite.

And he had thrown it all away for a woman who didn't even look at him twice once the federal marshals placed the steel cuffs around her wrists.

Genevieve was being held in a separate women's facility four states away. She had refused to take his calls, blocked his letters, and hired a divorce lawyer to annul their secret civil union the moment the judge handed down her sentence.

Julian buried his face in his hands, dry, jagged sobs tearing through his throat. He realized then the true genius of Alex Ward’s revenge. Alex hadn't beaten them with fists or shouted them down in the courtroom. He had simply handed them enough rope to hang themselves, stepped back, and watched their own greed do the rest.

And the worst part wasn't the concrete cell, the prison food, or the loss of his freedom.

The worst part was knowing that out there, in the bright, sunlit world he had been banished from, Alex Ward didn't even remember his name. He was just another failed line item in an audited ledger that had already been permanently closed and archived.
