Chapter 10 - The Secret of Aethelgard Island

-10-

The heavy commercial airliner slid sideways across the wet, ice-slicked tarmac of the Aethelgard Island airstrip, trailing a thick plume of white smoke from its scorched landing gear before finally coming to a grinding, shuddering halt just fifty yards from the sheer edge of a massive subterranean hangar carved directly into the dark granite cliffs.

Inside the flight deck, the silence that followed was heavy, suffocating, and surreal. The only sound was the rhythmic ticking of cooling metal engines and the steady patter of heavy rain lashing against the cracked windshield.

Captain Ronald Miller slumped forward against the dead instrument console, his breathing shallow and erratic, staring out at the desolate, windswept landscape outside. The runway was surrounded by high chain-link fences topped with razor wire, and in the distance, a battery of automated searchlights swept back and forth across the gray mist, illuminating rows of identical, unmarked transport hangars that looked like something straight out of a Cold War conspiracy thriller.

“We made it,” Miller whispered, his voice barely audible over the hiss of the cabin pressure valves. “We actually landed the bird.”

“We didn't land on a rescue strip, Ronald,” Laura said grimly, her hands trembling slightly as she unbuckled her harness and stood up from the pilot’s seat. “We just walked right into the lion’s den.”

She stepped over the smoking wreckage of the combat automaton and walked to the ruined doorway. Through the jagged gap, she looked down the narrow access corridor toward the first-class cabin. The security door was still barred from the inside, but she could hear muffled, rhythmic thuds echoing from the other side—Marcus and his operatives regrouping, realizing that their initial plan had failed, but that they were now holding three hundred hostages trapped inside a secure military installation.

Laura knew she couldn't stay in the cockpit. If she waited for the island security forces to secure the aircraft, they would simply flood the cabin with knockout gas, extract the passengers, and wipe every memory of Flight 709 from the historical record. She had to take the fight to them.

She reached down, unbuckled the heavy tactical knife from the belt of the fallen automaton, and tucked it securely into her boot. Then, taking a deep, steadying breath, she kicked the improvised metal barricade away from the door and stepped out into the dark, quiet corridor of the plane.

The main passenger cabin was dead silent. The emergency lighting cast a dim, amber glow across the rows of seats, where three hundred exhausted, terrified passengers sat huddled in stunned disbelief, entirely unaware of how close they had come to death. Up in row 14, however, several seats were empty. The overhead lockers above row 14 stood wide open, their contents strewn across the floor.

Marcus was gone, having vanished through the lower service hatch before the plane had even come to a complete stop.

Laura walked swiftly down the aisle, keeping her posture low and her senses on high alert. When she reached the emergency exit door over the right wing, she didn't hesitate. She threw the manual inflation lever, unlatched the heavy composite hatch, and shoved it outward into the howling wind and rain.

The emergency escape slide hissed as it deployed instantly, tumbling down onto the wet tarmac below. Without looking back, Laura leaped feet first onto the slide, sliding rapidly down through the driving rain until her boots hit the concrete runway with a sharp, echoing slap.

She was standing on Aethelgard Island—the very place where Project Icarus had been born, and the place where she would finally uncover the terrifying truth behind the disappearances that had haunted Blackwood for the past three years.

Before her towered the massive steel blast doors of Sub-Level 3, standing slightly ajar as if waiting specifically for her arrival. With her heart hammering against her ribs, Laura drew a steady breath, gripped the tactical knife in her right hand, and walked straight into the dark abyss of the underground facility.
