Spring arrived in full force by April, painting the rolling hills and mountain valleys in vibrant shades of emerald green, wildflower purple, and brilliant golden sunshine.
Miller’s Precision Auto & Restoration had undergone its own physical transformation. With the first quarterly licensing dividends from Sterling, Vance & Cole hitting my business account, I had finally invested in the expansion I had put off for years: a brand-new third service bay, state-of-the-art computerized alignment racks, and a dedicated customer lounge where local patrons could sit in comfortable leather chairs, drink gourmet coffee, and read while their cars were being serviced.
I stood in the newly renovated lobby, watching my lead technician, a sharp young mechanic named Marcus whom I had hired the previous year, explain a diagnostic readout to an elderly customer who was smiling and nodding in relief.
The shop ran like a Swiss watch—efficient, transparent, and completely honest. No hidden fees, no sketchy vendor shortcuts, and no parasitic relatives lurking in the background trying to skim off the top.
My phone buzzed on the front counter.
It was a text message from Arthur Sterling:
“Jared, the federal magistrate just signed off on the final sentencing decree for the Northstar case. Five years for Melissa, four for Leo. It’s officially over. Are you free for lunch in the city next Thursday? I want to introduce you to our senior cyber-security partners.”
I stared at the screen for a moment, letting out a quiet, grounding breath.
The chapter was closed. The legal saga that had threatened to unravel my life had been legally, definitively resolved, leaving the guilty parties to face the consequences of their own actions while I stood firmly in the sunlight.
I tapped out a quick reply:
“Thanks, Arthur. Thursday works perfectly. See you at noon.”

I slipped the phone back into my pocket, walked over to the open bay doors, and looked out at the bright, open highway stretching toward the mountains.
The road ahead was wide, clear, and completely unencumbered.
