Chapter 10 - The Unraveling of the Syndicate

-10-

While our personal life was finally finding its footing, the federal investigation into Arthur and Teresa’s broader financial network was rapidly expanding into a multi-state RICO case. Because Arthur Bradley had spent decades laundering money through shell corporations across Tennessee, Florida, and the Cayman Islands, the federal prosecutors weren't just looking at a local family fraud scheme—they were dismantling a sophisticated white-collar syndicate that had preyed on dozens of unsuspecting families, small business owners, and vulnerable investors since the late 1990s.

Marcus Vance kept us updated on the weekly developments through encrypted legal briefings.

"Your father is attempting to cut a deal," Marcus told me over the phone on a rainy Tuesday morning as I worked from my home office. "He’s offering to hand over the digital encryption keys to three secondary offshore accounts in exchange for a reduced sentence recommendation. But federal prosecutors aren't biting. The evidence we recovered from Teresa’s leather ledger alone is enough to put both of them away for a minimum of fifteen to twenty years without parole."

"What about Teresa?" I asked, looking out the window at the rain drumming against the glass. "Has she said anything?"

"Not a word," Marcus sighed. "According to her court-appointed counsel, she’s maintained a stoic silence, convinced to the bitter end that you’ll eventually cave out of family loyalty and sign an affidavit claiming the power of attorney was a 'miscommunication.' She still genuinely believes she owns you, Connor."

I let out a quiet breath, feeling a profound sense of closure wash over me. The illusion of my mother’s invincible control had completely shattered, yet she was clinging to the jagged pieces of her delusion like a drowning sailor holding onto an anchor.

"She’s welcome to her delusions," I said firmly. "I’m done fighting ghosts. My focus is right here."

"Good," Marcus replied. "Because your engineering firm just formally reinstated your executive status with a retroactive bonus adjustment to compensate for the corporate harassment you endured. Your reputation in the structural engineering community is completely intact—in fact, several major municipal bridge contracts have specifically requested you as lead consultant because of how cleanly you handled the forensic audit."

"Tell them I'm taking projects one at a time," I said, glancing toward the living room where Amy and Frederick were reading a picture book together on the rug. "My family comes first now. No exceptions, no late nights, and no missed birthdays."
