Chapter 10 - CLAIRE'S CONFESSION

-10

They staged the meeting in the conservatory.

Claire had always liked that room.

Glass walls.

White orchids.

A view of Lake Michigan.

It was also wired for audio through the estate’s security system.

Nicholas sat alone in his wheelchair near the windows.

At least, Claire believed he was alone.

Hannah waited in the adjoining medical room with Walter and two security officers.

Authorities had been informed.

The goal was not entrapment.

It was safety and documentation.

Claire arrived wearing black.

No silver gown.

No photographer’s smile.

She looked tired.

Nicholas watched her enter.

“You look better,” she said.

“I am.”

“That nurse stopped your medication.”

“She stopped the poison.”

Claire’s expression did not change.

“You sound dramatic.”

“Rebecca sounded dramatic too.”

That did it.

Claire’s eyes hardened.

“Don’t use her.”

“She recorded you.”

“I know.”

Nicholas’s breath caught.

Behind the wall, Hannah stared at the monitor.

Claire continued.

“I knew she recorded me because I found the phone after your accident.”

“You searched my car while Daniel was dying.”

Claire looked away.

“Nicholas—”

“His name was Daniel.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

Silence.

Nicholas continued.

“Did you tell Thomas to hit me?”

“I told him to stop you.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“My father took control.”

“Your father said hit me again.”

Claire stared.

“You have the footage.”

“Yes.”

Her face changed.

For the first time, she seemed to understand the depth of evidence.

“What do you want?”

“The truth.”

“You won’t like it.”

“I haven’t liked anything about you lately.”

Claire laughed once.

Then she sat.

“My father made a mistake with Rebecca.”

“A mistake?”

“He was testing a medication combination.”

“Without her informed consent.”

“He believed it could help certain neurological conditions.”

“Rebecca didn’t have one.”

“She had anxiety.”

“That is not the same thing.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

Claire closed her eyes.

“I was twenty-two.”

“You were her best friend.”

“I was terrified.”

“So you helped him.”

“I asked her not to report him.”

“You lied to me.”

“Yes.”

“You let me believe she was unstable.”

“Yes.”

“You let her die.”

Claire opened her eyes.

“I did not kill Rebecca.”

“Who did?”

“My father.”

The words seemed to empty the room.

Hannah stared at the monitor.

Nicholas did not move.

Claire continued.

“He gave her sedatives.”

“Why?”

“She was going to meet a reporter.”

Nicholas’s face hardened.

“She was going public.”

“Yes.”

“He meant to kill her?”

Claire began crying.

“He said he only wanted her unconscious long enough to miss the meeting.”

“Do you believe that?”

“No.”

The answer came immediately.

Nicholas looked devastated.

Claire covered her face.

“I found out afterward.”

“And you stayed silent.”

“My father said it was too late.”

“Too late for Rebecca.”

“Yes.”

“Not for justice.”

Claire’s eyes flashed.

“You say that now like your family didn’t bury bodies.”

Nicholas went still.

Hannah knew enough about Nicholas’s past to understand the accusation carried weight.

Claire continued.

“You think you’re morally clean because someone hurt you?”

“No.”

Nicholas’s voice was quiet.

“I think Rebecca deserved the truth regardless of who I am.”

Claire looked away.

He asked:

“Why me?”

“What?”

“Why marry me?”

Her lips trembled.

“At first?”

“Yes.”

“I loved you.”

Nicholas’s face tightened.

Claire laughed bitterly.

“You don’t believe me.”

“No.”

“I did.”

“Then why poison me?”

“Because after the accident, you started remembering.”

Nicholas froze.

“What?”

“You kept asking about Rebecca’s phone.”

Claire wiped tears from her face.

“My father panicked.”

“So you drugged me.”

“He said we needed to control the confusion.”

“He created the confusion.”

“Yes.”

“Why continue?”

Claire’s voice lowered.

“Because your memory kept improving.”

Behind the wall, Hannah felt fury rise.

Nicholas said:

“So the worse I became, the safer you felt.”

Claire cried harder.

“I told myself it was temporary.”

“You slapped a man on the floor because he said his dead sister’s name.”

“I was scared.”

“That does not explain cruelty.”

“No.”

Claire looked at him.

“I hated you for surviving.”

The room became silent.

Nicholas stopped breathing for a second.

Claire continued.

“When your car crashed, my father called me from the road.”

She laughed through tears.

“He said you were probably dead.”

Nicholas stared.

“And I cried.”

“Because you loved me?”

“Yes.”

“Then?”

“Then the hospital called. You survived.”

She covered her mouth.

“And instead of relief, the first thing I felt was fear.”

Nicholas looked toward the lake.

Claire whispered:

“I hated myself for that.”

“Not enough to stop.”

“No.”

“Why did you slap me?”

“Because I spent eight months watching you slowly come back.”

Her voice cracked.

“Every word you remembered made me think Rebecca was coming back too.”

Nicholas’s face changed.

Not anger anymore.

Grief.

“She should have.”

Claire looked down.

“Yes.”

Then she said:

“There’s one thing you don’t know.”

Nicholas turned.

“What?”

“My father still has Rebecca’s original records.”

“Where?”

“He kept everything.”

“Where?”

Claire looked toward the glass door.

“I need protection.”

Nicholas’s voice became cold.

“You want a deal.”

“I want to survive.”

“From your father?”

Claire whispered:

“You still think I’m the dangerous one.”

Nicholas stared.

She continued.

“My father knows Thomas came back.”

“How?”

“I told him.”

“Why?”

“Because he threatened my mother.”

Nicholas laughed bitterly.

“Always someone else.”

Claire stood.

“He is leaving tonight.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

“Records?”

“Private clinic basement.”

“Which clinic?”

“The old Whitmore Rehabilitation Center.”

That facility had closed three years earlier.

Claire reached into her purse.

Security tensed behind the wall.

She removed a key card.

Placed it on the table.

“Basement archive room.”

Nicholas did not touch it.

Claire said:

“If you want proof of what he did to Rebecca, it’s there.”

Then she looked directly toward the hidden camera.

Hannah’s skin prickled.

Claire knew.

“I know you’re listening, Nurse Reed.”

Hannah stared at the screen.

Claire smiled sadly.

“My father knows about your brother.”

Hannah stopped breathing.

Nicholas’s head snapped up.

“What did you say?”

Claire looked toward the wall.

“He knows where Ethan is staying.”

Hannah ran from the room before anyone could stop her.

Her phone was already in her hand.

The neighbor answered on the second ring.

“Hannah?”

“Where’s Ethan?”

A pause.

“He left ten minutes ago.”

Everything inside Hannah froze.

“What?”

“A man came from the hospital.”

“What man?”

“He said Ethan’s cardiology appointment had been moved up.”

Hannah could barely breathe.

“Did Ethan go with him?”

“Yes.”

The world narrowed.

Claire had not come to confess.

May you like

She had come to deliver a message.

Dr. Malcolm Whitmore had taken Ethan.
