Chapter 2 - The Jet-Bridge Confrontation-2

The air inside the aluminum tube of the jet-bridge was freezing, thick with the smell of burning aviation fuel, melting tar, and the sharp chemical tang of high-voltage industrial air conditioning. I stood flat against the reinforced steel wall frame just three feet from the aircraft’s primary cabin door, my hands tucked casually inside the pockets of my overcoat, my gray eyes locked onto the narrow threshold.

The boarding door groaned as the ground crew threw the manual override latches from the outside, the seal breaking with a loud, violent hiss of compressed air that resonated through the corridor.

A second later, the cabin passengers began to cascade backward out of the aircraft, their faces pale with a mixture of confusion and growing irritation as the flight attendants announced an emergency administrative de-planing. But I didn't look at the corporate analysts or the holiday travelers. I kept my eyes fixed on the cream wool fabric of a single coat moving through the crowd fifty feet down the line.

Cassandra Vance stepped through the cabin frame, her designer bag dangled from her wrist, her blonde hair perfectly styled into a flawless chignon that hadn't lost a single strand during the initial boarding. Her face was a mask of cold, beautiful serenity—until her blue eyes traveled past the gate agents and locked onto my face.

The calculation moved across her symmetrical features faster than fear, her posture rigid as iron as she tried to swerve her angle toward the secondary VIP corridor.

"Cassandra," I said, my voice dropping into that low register that carried the absolute freeze of a winter frost. I didn't move aggressively; I simply stepped into the center of the walkway, blocking her path with a finality that made her private security guards freeze mid-step behind her. "You left something at the gate. A gray stuffed bear and an eight-year-old—sorry, a five-year-old twin bloodline. I believe the rules of the house require you to clear the property lines before you cross the border."

Cassandra let out a sharp, cynical laugh that carried an untouchable, aristocratic confidence, her fingers tightening around the leather strap of her purse. "Ryker Steel. I didn't realize the CEO of Steel Global had assumed a secondary post as a municipal child welfare monitor for O’Hare. Those children are under the legal administration of the Callahan trust, which operates entirely outside your firm's jurisdiction. Step aside before my corporate legal team logs a visual harassment complaint with the federal aviation authority."

"The Callahan trust is empty, Cassandra," I said, a bitter, hollow smile touching my lips as I stepped closer to her position, forcing her to raise her chin to meet my stare. "Marcus Vance... your older brother at the Nicosia office... he just accessed the primary capital reserve vault forty-five minutes ago using Arthur's forged biometric signature. But my cyber units intercepted the transfer at ninety-nine point eight percent. The eighty-five million dollars isn't moving to Cyprus tonight, Cassandra. It’s currently sitting inside a federal holding account registered to my family's private estate under the National Security Asset Seizure Act."

The color drained from her face so rapidly it looked as though she had been struck by an invisible fist. She took a slow, frantic step backward against the aluminum trim of the jet-bridge, her fingers clawing at her purse lining as she realized the tactical ground had completely vanished beneath her designer shoes.

"You think you caught me, Ryker?" she hissed through her teeth, her voice dropping into a harsh, ragged whisper that sounded nothing like the elegant socialite who coordinated museum fundraisers. "Arthur Callahan was a weak, pathetic fool who died because his heart couldn't handle the scale of his own financial vulnerabilities. If you keep me in this terminal tonight... my syndicate will execute the secondary clause against the children's corporate titles before the markets open tomorrow morning. You’ll have the twins, Ryker, but they’ll be penniless beggars living in a concrete block by sunrise."

"They’re already home, Cassandra," I whispered, gesturing sharply to the two uniform state investigators who had just stepped through the gate doors behind her with heavy steel handcuffs raised. "And you're going to a concrete block tonight."
