Chapter 12 - THE FINGER ON THE TRIGGER

-12
"Drop the trigger, Julian," I said, stepping past Evelyn and Maria, closing the distance between us until I was standing just ten feet away from him.
"Stay back, Jonathan!" Julian shrieked, his finger trembling violently over the red button. "One step closer and I turn this entire skyscraper into a tomb for all of us!"
"You won't do it," I said calmly, keeping my voice steady, staring directly into his frantic, dilated eyes.
"Try me! Test me!" Julian screamed, spittle flying from his lips. "I have nothing left to lose! Everything I built, everything I planned for thirty years—destroyed by a sentimental, self-righteous fool!"
"You lost because you forgot one fundamental rule of human nature, Julian," I replied, taking another slow, deliberate step forward. "You thought power came from money, ledgers, and kidnapped children. But real power comes from something you could never buy, never program, and never control."
"Shut up! Shut up!" Julian yelled, his thumb pressing halfway down on the trigger housing.
"A father's willingness to walk through fire to protect his son," I finished.
Before Julian’s thumb could depress the detonator fully, Maria moved with blinding, supernatural speed. She didn't shoot him; she whipped a heavy, weighted tactical throwing knife from her sleeve.
Thwack!
The blade sliced cleanly through the air, embedding itself deep into the flesh of Julian’s right wrist with sickening precision.
With a piercing shriek of agony, Julian dropped the detonation trigger. It clattered harmlessly against the hardwood floor.
Detective Miller lunged forward, tackling Julian to the ground and slamming heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists while Evelyn and the federal marshals swarmed in to secure the perimeter.
Julian thrashed against the floor, screaming curses as he was hauled up to his feet by the marshals, his corporate armor completely shattered, reduced to a pathetic, broken criminal being dragged toward the freight elevator in disgrace.

As he was hauled past me, Julian glared up with venomous hatred. "You haven't won, Jonathan... the syndicate is bigger than me... someone else will finish what we started..."
"Let them try," I said coldly. "We're waiting."
