Chapter 8 - The Balcony Standoff

8 - 15

The icy Northern California wind whipped across the stone balustrade of the second-floor balcony, carrying the damp scent of pine, ozone, and impending violence. Cassian Thorne stepped out of the French doors into the freezing mist, his charcoal overcoat snapping around his ankles like the wings of a dark bird. He didn't flinch against the cold; his posture was rigid, composed, and radiating an effortless, predatory authority.

Down in the courtyard, Viktor Volkov barked a harsh laugh as he spotted Cassian standing alone on the balcony above.

"Ah, the king steps out of his tower!" Viktor shouted, his amplified voice booming across the stone expanse. He tossed his half-smoked cigar into the slush and stepped closer to the armored personnel carrier, flanked by his two massive bodyguards. "I was beginning to think you died of fright, Cassian! Where are your brave enforcers? Did they crawl out through the coal chutes like rats?"

Cassian rested his hands casually on the cold stone balustrade, looking down at the Russian pakhan with an expression of supreme, unbothered contempt.

"You talk too much, Viktor," Cassian called out, his voice cutting through the wind with chilling clarity. "It’s a common failing among men who inherit their territories instead of conquering them. You think blowing up a few security cameras and bribing a disgruntled maintenance chief makes you the king of the West Coast?"

Viktor’s smile tightened, a dark flush rising up his thick neck. "We will see how brave you talk, Thorne, when my men kick down your mahogany doors and drag you out by your ankles!"

Forty seconds, Cassian thought, his eyes subtly checking the shadows along the roofline above the old greenhouse. Move, Elena.

True to her word, Elena was already a ghost cutting through the freezing darkness. Stripped of her maid’s uniform apron, clad entirely in dark tactical gear, she scrambled across the steep slate-shingle roof of the west wing with the agility of an experienced mountain climber. The freezing rain slicked the roof tiles, but her rubber-soled boots found purchase with lethal precision. She reached the edge of the service catwalk, vaulted over the wrought-iron railing, and dropped silently into the overgrown courtyard garden behind the greenhouse, landing in a deep crouch that absorbed every ounce of impact.

Thirty yards away, parked right beside the greenhouse wall, was Viktor Volkov’s secondary command van—an unmarked black Ford Transit outfitted with satellite communication dishes and tactical monitors.

Guarding the rear doors of the van were two Bratva mercenaries, their attention entirely focused on the front courtyard where Viktor was currently screaming up at Cassian on the balcony.

Elena slipped through the thick rhododendron bushes, moving with absolute, lethal silence. Her heart didn't race; her breathing remained slow, measured, and disciplined.

Thirty seconds, she calculated, drawing Julian’s SIG Sauer from her waistband with her right hand while pulling a flash-bang pin with her left teeth.

"Viktor," Cassian’s voice echoed loudly from the balcony above, deliberately drawing every ounce of the pakhan’s attention upward. "If you wanted my shipping terminals, all you had to do was ask. Instead, you brought an army to a private estate. Which means, legally speaking, everything you brought onto my property now belongs to me under California salvage laws."

Viktor sneered, raising his megaphone. "You arrogant son of a bitch—"

CLACK-HISSS!

The flash-bang grenade sailed through the air from the shadows of the greenhouse, landing squarely between the two Bratva guards stationed at the rear of the command van.

Before the guards could even register the metallic object rolling across the gravel, the grenade detonated with a blinding flash of two million candela and a deafening 180-decibel concussive roar.

BANG!

The two guards dropped instantly, screaming and clutching their bleeding ears, blinded and paralyzed by sensory overload.

Before the echoes of the blast could even fade across the courtyard, Elena stepped out of the shadows like an avenging angel of death. Two silenced 9mm rounds cracked through the damp night air with the crisp precision of breaking glass.

Both guards slumped lifelessly against the side of the command van.

Down in the courtyard, Viktor Volkov stopped mid-sentence. He whipped his head around toward the rear of the command van, his eyes bulging in absolute horror as he realized his rear flank had just been completely dismantled by a single, terrifyingly efficient ghost.

"What the hell?!" Viktor roared, turning to his primary enforcer. "Ivan! Check the van! Kill whoever—"

Before Ivan could take a step, Cassian Thorne drew his Beretta from beneath his coat, aimed down from the balcony, and put a bullet clean through the sole of Viktor Volkov’s expensive Italian leather shoe, pinning him to the courtyard pavement.

May you like

Viktor shrieked in agony, dropping to one knee as blood poured over the cobblestones.

And from the shadows of the command van, Elena stepped out into the floodlights, her SIG Sauer locked dead onto the center of Viktor Volkov’s forehead.
